These Changes Will Help Me Make More Videos For DTube

in #dtube6 years ago (edited)

Have you seen the Stateofthedapps rankings? Steemit is on top of the bunch, but DTube is down at about number 76! While that’s actually not that bad, considering how many dapps exist overall, I think DTube should be doing much better than that. Especially since it’s one of the largest, if not the largest dapps on the Steem blockchain.

This year, I’m going to endeavour to use more of the dapps, particularly DTube. I have been uploading videos, but I’m going to try uploading more this year. In order to achieve this, I’m going to have to find a happy medium between quality and quantity.

I’m going to streamline my process a little, starting with my gear. Right now I record with both my iPhone and my mirrorless camera. The flow with the mirrorless is the lack of an audio-in port, so I am not able to use an external microphone for better audio - which I think is very crucial in making videos. It also has some connectivity issues with my Mac, so at present have to download the video in a two step process, which is a bit of a waste of time.

Going forward, I’m going to shoot more with the iPhone, which has an audio-in port, so I can archive the better audio quality without having to synch in post. Also, considering the raison d’etre of DTube at the moment, consistency is of more value than visual quality of the video.

The second thing I will be optimising is my editing process. I am reverting to my first love, iMovie. I hadn’t used it in 3 years, and quite a lot has changed since. Apple has really re-designed it to feel more like the iOS version, which is clean and simple. I edited the last two videos with iMovie and I really enjoyed it. It’s much less powerful than FinalCut Pro X, but that’a just it - I don’t need that much power right now. Besides, my computer is ageing so FCP is finding it hard to run properly now.

I tried DaVinci Resolve, which is brilliant (and free), but I didn’t enjoy editing on there at all. I think I need a much bigger screen than my 13” mac for DR to be an efficient tool. Right now it’s just really hard to use. I love the colour grading tool though, which is sadly missing in iMovie. To combat that, I’m going to try and customise the video look in-camera so I don’t have to colour correct much.

Finally, I'm really thinking of avoiding the use of music in my videos. I've been having major copyright issues on videos I uploaded 2-3 years ago on YouTube. The music was supposedly public domain at the time, but not anymore. Various unscrupulous companies have found a way of registering some of these musical pieces as theirs. They then register with YouTube/Google and send out copyright notices. Since Google is too big to give a damn about what's what, creators are left fighting these daft requests on their own. Most (like me) just don't bother.

Thanks for the advice, I am trying to move to do some spontaneous vlogs though on my old phone editing apps crash. For me videoclips I take up to a month each, honestly except for one when me not knowing they had pressured dtube has not ever voted and they have been premiers just like in every network, not sad or expecting it but objectively slowly being aware that is not the kind of content they might be interested but that is how I work (currently working in one, count a month at least) so trying to find simpler and more spontaneous things I can share and fight the perfectionist in me. Of course I would never expect a vote but that the only one time it happened was due to people doing a little stir discourages me a little. I work really hard in each one. Not complaining just trying to add a "simpler" in betweens, wip and such but cannot even imagine vlogging daily. My partner bought me a small camera for it though, and will upgrade phone soon cos honestly for simpler videos unloading on pc, edit, reexport might be the time that makes me lazy about doing it in the moment.
Good advice on the software. hedac been using davinci too

This is a great comment @yidneth. You know what? I think your videos probably don't/didn't get that many DTube votes because of how good they are. I know that sounds strange, but if you think about it, they look like professional stuff you can see on MTV or something. I think the curators might mistake it for a stolen video. Some people upload music videos from pop stars here and hope to be upvoted for it. Do you see what I mean?

I think what might do better on DTube is some behind the scenes stuff. Short 3 minute videos talking about your process, what you're working on, your rodents 🐁, :) etc. You can put those up more frequently while waiting to upload the perfectionist stuff the normal way.

Well, ahh I wish but I appreciate your compliment especially because it's my partner who is best at videos but it's been me learning and editing them all this year, still learning with his tutorship, I work really hard on them, and yes I'm insanely slow. XD Started working on a new one now and arg! LOL hahah wish me luck (I want to destroy my old computer)

Still not being curated because it's good XD sounds not fair to me... (not meaning it's good or not, that's subject to taste). I insist, not complaining about it. For Ligo and Haunted I literally spent months. And here I'd say I sense the reason is because I don't post often enough but yet again they take me long to do.

About my identity, hahah I think I have engaged here long and consistently enough for curators to know it's really me and my work, I am also active on discord, I mean I have been around almost a year and I have never left, though slow poster, have not taken "breaks" from Steemit. I tried also (ages back) with a little series of "how I record the songs", and some more spontaneous talking, just once or twice, I simply stopped and resumed back to what I like doing. By no means I upload (ever) expecting a vote... but there comes a moment where you simply think... maybe this is "not" what they want or what they like, should I just stick to not use it.

I have not shared through dtube the old videoclips on my youtube channel, those I simply shared, just shared the ones that were premiers at the same time I did in my network.

For me it was embarassing to get just one dtube (on Ligo last Summer) vote with a note that they vote whoever they want because people started to tag them and pressure after half a week, which is not something I wish or desire... I had nothing to do with it, and it almost made me feel bad despite people good intentions, so when that moment was over I thought, ok, now insist, just upload next...

Still I will be sharing more spontaneous content but not due to "what they like" but because I was encouraged by my partner... I opened a "patreon" and I simply wanted to do this works in progress and more interactive formula. Wether it will be for dtube, youtube or only patreon I still don't know, so far I want to break ice. It's in my resolutions, wish me luck! XD Though I am the worst talking to a camera, I am a dork hahah

@nathanmars included me kindly in his list, so I kind of like to want to try it.

For a while on my youtube account I thought about vlogging long ago but I don't have consistent time to do it, we have logs of our hikes since last year hahah a year of vlogs not published on my hardrive really hahah I just have encouraged myself to post more and 2018 rendered quite a few official videos due to it. Hector got me a little camera for Christmas I may use for vlogging but more focused to "making of" and "works in progress" or spontaneous acoustic live takes.

I insist again I'm not complaining, and I'm grateful all the same for the service provided and the "frame" for other fellow Steemians to share their videos... And I think it's one of the best dapps for steemit along with dsound. I like that it exists and I've made good friends with many fellow dtubers including you, camuel, greencross, snook which I love to follow, so just because of that I'm grateful

I hope for a day when enough people have enough voting power to make a difference. I'm sure most of the people that love your stuff just don't have enough voting power to reward the post accordingly. Hopefully these low price days will create a larger middle class and this will become a reality as the price begins to climb.

Looking forward to watching your next video!

Thank you, I have always thought of the "rewards" numerically secondary, not that I wouldn't need it, but really it's not about the "number" it's about the recognition of effort. Will I keep on insisting? Likely ;), such is my nature, right now it feels it's a rather lovely family but I don't feel part of it yet. Give me dust vote with a meaninful comment and I'm happy, and I do do do mean it. Still there comes a moment where you blush a little and sigh and say... just don't push it. This is what I do at the rate I can do it, it has to be enough

oh I would love to see more videos of you on dtube Yidneth!! will you do vlogging style videos, or also music?

Music videos is not what they want, I think by now I should assume that XD, and I am not fond of vlogging though I may try some works in progress for my new patreon and will see if I get used to it... I'll see on the go :)

That’s weird I didn’t know they were selective about content. I thought the votes were quite random actually.. whatever you decide to do I’m looking forward to it

I stopped using Final Cut Pro because I updated my iMac and the cracked version I had got knocked out! I miss it! I bought wondershare filmora but it’s slow as Shit! iMovie is what I work with too!
I stopped using my old iPhone 6 and started using my mirrorless m50 , mic isn’t too bad on it! Aaah time to go make a video lol

Posted using Partiko iOS

I almost bought the M50 last month. I decided to max out what I already have instead and see what happens.

By the way, you can still use your Final Cut.

  1. Navigate to: /Applications/Final Cut Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/Final Cut Pro
  2. click on that and it will load. Some 32 bit stuff wont work properly, but you can get 90% functionality.
  3. (optional) create a shortcut to that file on your desktop so you don't have to navigate every time.

Yeah, if you already have a good cam might as well ricket till the jens gets out of socket lol

Cool, I’m gonna try this. I should still have it installed. If I do that would be a dream come tru lol

Oh man, that music thing sucks. I can't use dtube...for some reason I just alawys get error messages whether I try to upload from my computer or phone.

Makes me sad.

It MIGHT be good for the rest of the blockchain though...since I'm not particulary good at video, lol

Oh no. I'm sure the error is something easy to fix.. like not having tags or not uploading a thumbnail "snap" or something like that. Your videos don't have to be good.. the world would benefit from that lovely smile of yours :)

haha and when the smile goes bad... dun dun dun. I'll just have to make a video called " When good smiles go bad." Could make a great horror short film.

Hmm, I know I did tags and a thumbnail.

I've tried so may times!

I'll try again sometimes this week! There's gotta be a way

Don't give up!!

I really envy your enthusiasm and I really respect that! Good luck in all that you do.

Thank you :)

In the year I have been here it has been impressive to see the development of these DApps on the blockchain and despite the prices they continue to show how powerful the ecosystem can become. I too have broadened my engagement to include a number of DApps but still hesitant to use @dtube given my time constraints but I have seen its promise and continue to see how I can support users by curating their content and engaging actively.

Posted using Partiko iOS

The engagement helps and matters a lot too. Thank you for your support.

oh I don't know about MAC, but I'm using a free software and I'm happy with it. It's called Videopad editor. What it's missing though is some nice text effects, and I think iMovie is much better for this. I need to find a way to make a proper video intro, but haven't found our how yet.

With regards to quality over quantity, that's my eternal struggle. I don't want anyone to watch my videos and think "this is total crap", so I'm careful with my content...but I do the same with written posts, so I guess it's just my rhythm too ahah. Anyways great to see you more on dtube now!

Thank you. I'm enjoying being on video :)
I also have been looking at creating a kind of 1-2 second intro. I may outsource it to someone better at making them :)

oh awesome, if you find someone let me know =)

I cant hear the noise.

Shazin!!!
I think my voice is the noise haha
Hope you're well.

Do you have any special topics for dtubers?
I am looking forward to see your video.
Go ahead. Best of luck.

I probably do. The way I do it now is, I just upload whatever I feel like, just as I would on a YouTube channel say. That way, it may end up being useful to others outside DTube and rank organically in Google.

I'm not a big fan of stats but it does have it uses. To be honest for the best 20-30 days I have basically been using dtube, so I really do not trust those rankings. I think its based on votes, because I voted for a few apps on there, so...

Well I am stuck with my mum's tecno f2 for now. Hopefully I earn something tangible from my videos so I can get a decent phone for recoding.

Posted using Partiko Android

That's probably good enough for now.. unless your mum wants her phone back :)

Lol oh she does, that's why I'm so bent on getting a new one. Its quite embarrassing. A 24 year old struggling for a phone with his mother. Would have gotten one last December but I had other things I needed to prioritise. Well, January is looking good. Might earn enough to get something decent phone

Maybe you can tandem with a musician here and they can create custom pieces of play according to your needs :)

I've done this a couple of times actually for DTube videos :)
