Nonlinear solitary solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson set of equations are studied in order to investigate their stability by employing a fully-kinetic simulation approach. The study is carried out in the ion-acoustic regime for a collisionless, electrostatic and Maxwellian electron-ion plasma. The trapped population of electrons is modeled based on well-known Schamel distribution function. Head-on mutual collisions of nonlinear solutions are performed in order to examine their collisional stability. The findings include three major aspects: (I) These nonlinear solutions are found to be divided into three categories based on their Mach numbers, i.e. stable, semi-stable and unstable. Semi-stable solutions indicates a smooth transition from stable to unstable solutions for increasing Mach number. (II) The stability of solutions is traced back to a condition imposed on averaged velocities, i.e. net neutrality. It is shown that a bipolar structure is produced in the flux of electrons, early in the temporal evolution. This bipolar structure acts as the seed of the net-neutrality instability, which tips off the energy balance of nonlinear solution during collisions. As the Mach number increases, the amplitude of bipolar structure grows and results in a stronger instability. (III) It is established that during mutual collisions, a merging process of electron holes can happen to a variety of degrees, based on their velocity characteristics. Specifically, the number of rotations of electron holes around each other (in the merging phase) varies. Furthermore, it is observed that in case of a non-integer number of rotations, two electron holes exchange their phase space cores.

We theoretically describe the quasi one-dimensional transverse spreading of a light pulse propagating in a nonlinear optical material in the presence of a uniform background light intensity. For short propagation distances the pulse can be described within a nondispersive approximation by means of Riemann's approach. For larger distances, wave breaking occurs, leading to the formation of dispersive shocks at both ends of the pulse. We describe this phenomenon within Whitham modulation theory, which yields an excellent agreement with numerical simulations. Our analytic approach makes it possible to extract the leading asymptotic behavior of the parameters of the shock.

The real spectrum of bound states produced by PT-symmetric Hamiltonians usually suffers breakup at a critical value of the strength of gain-loss terms, i.e., imaginary part of the complex potential. On the other hand, it is known that the PT-symmetry can be made unbreakable in a one-dimensional (1D) model with self-defocusing nonlinearity whose strength grows fast enough from the center to periphery. The model is nonlinearizable, i.e., it does not have a linear spectrum, while the (unbreakable) PT symmetry in it is defined by spectra of continuous families of nonlinear self-trapped states (solitons). Here we report results for a 2D nonlinearizable model whose PT symmetry remains unbroken for arbitrarily large values of the gain-loss coeffcient. Further, we introduce an extended 2D model with the imaginary part of potential ~ xy in the Cartesian coordinates. The latter model is not a PT-symmetric one, but it also supports continuous families of self-trapped states, thus suggesting an extension of the concept of the PT symmetry. For both models, universal analytical forms are found for nonlinearizable tails of the 2D modes, and full exact solutions are produced for particular solitons, including ones with the unbreakable PT symmetry, while generic soliton families are found in a numerical form. The PT-symmetric system gives rise to generic families of stable single- and double-peak 2D solitons (including higher-order radial states of the single-peak solitons), as well as families of stable vortex solitons with winding numbers m = 1, 2, and 3. In the model with imaginary potential ~ xy, families of single-and multi-peak solitons and vortices are stable if the imaginary potential is subject to spatial confinement. In an elliptically deformed version of the latter model, an exact solution is found for vortex solitons with m = 1.

We study the scalar and tensor perturbations generated by the fragmentation of the inflaton condensate into oscillons or transients after inflation, using nonlinear classical lattice simulations. Without including the backreaction of metric perturbations, we find that the magnitude of scalar metric perturbations never exceeds a few , whereas the maximal strength of the gravitational wave signal today is for standard post-inflationary expansion histories. We provide parameter scalings for the -attractor models of inflation, which can be easily applied to other models. We also discuss the likelihood of primordial black hole formation, as well as conditions under which the gravitational wave signal can be at observationally interesting frequencies and amplitudes. Finally, we provide an upper bound on the frequency of the peak of the gravitational wave signal, which applies to all preheating scenarios.

Domain formation and self-sustained oscillations in quantum cascade lasers (1810.13207v2)

We study oscillations in quantum cascade lasers due to traveling electric field domains, which are observed both in simulations and experiments. These oscillations occur in a range of negative differential resistance and we clarify the condition determining whether the boundary between domains of different electric field can become stationary.

Spin versions of the complex trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider model from cyclic quivers (1811.08717v2)

Maxime Fairon

2018-11-21

We study multiplicative quiver varieties associated to specific extensions of cyclic quivers with vertices. Their global Poisson structure is characterised by quasi-Hamiltonian algebras related to these quivers, which were studied by Van den Bergh for an arbitrary quiver. We show that the spaces are generically isomorphic to the case corresponding to an extended Jordan quiver. This provides a set of local coordinates, which we use to interpret integrable systems as spin variants of the trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider system. This generalises to new spin cases recent works on classical integrable systems in the Ruijsenaars-Schneider family.

Non-commutative NLS-type hierarchies: dressing & solutions (1810.10937v2)

We consider the generalized matrix non-linear Schrodinger (NLS) hierarchy. By employing the universal Darboux-dressing scheme we derive solutions for the hierarchy of integrable PDEs via solutions of the matrix Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko equation, and we also identify recursion relations that yield the Lax pairs for the whole matrix NLS-type hierarchy. These results are obtained considering either matrix-integral or general order matrix-differential operators as Darboux-dressing transformations. In this framework special links with the Airy and Burgers equations are also discussed. The matrix version of the Darboux transform is also examined leading to the non-commutative version of the Riccati equation. The non-commutative Riccati equation is solved and hence suitable conserved quantities are derived. In this context we also discuss the infinite dimensional case of the NLS matrix model as it provides a suitable candidate for a quantum version of the usual NLS model. Similarly, the non-commutitave Riccati equation for the general dressing transform is derived and it is naturally equivalent to the one emerging from the solution of the auxiliary linear problem.

Time-like boundary conditions in the NLS model (1902.07551v1)

We focus on the non-linear Schrodinger model and we extend the notion of space-time dualities in the presence of integrable time-like boundary conditions. We identify the associated time-like `conserved' quantities and Lax pairs as well as the corresponding boundary conditions. In particular, we derive the generating function of the space components of the Lax pairs in the case of time-like boundaries defined by solutions of the reflection equation. Analytical conditions on the boundary Lax pair lead to the time like-boundary conditions. The time-like dressing is also performed for the first time, as an effective means to produce the space components of the Lax pair of the associated hierarchy. This is particularly relevant in the absence of a classical r-matrix, or when considering complicated underlying algebraic structures. The associated time Riccati equations and hence the time-like conserved quantities are also derived. We use as the main paradigm for this purpose the matrix NLS-type hierarchy.

Integrable Lorentz-breaking deformations and RG flows (1902.05407v2)

We construct the all loop effective action for WZW models perturbed by current-bilinear terms of the type , and , the last two of which explicitly break Lorentz invariance. For isotropic couplings we prove integrability. For the case in which only the first two terms are present we identify a non-perturbative symmetry of the effective action and we compute the exact beta-functions. These become identically zero outside a bounded region in the parametric space.

Solvable cubic resonant systems (1805.03634v2)

2018-05-09

Weakly nonlinear analysis of resonant PDEs in recent literature has generated a number of resonant systems for slow evolution of the normal mode amplitudes that possess remarkable properties. Despite being infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with cubic nonlinearities in the equations of motion, these resonant systems admit special analytic solutions, which furthermore display periodic perfect energy returns to the initial configurations. Here, we construct a very large class of resonant systems that shares these properties that have so far been seen in specific examples emerging from a few standard equations of mathematical physics (the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, nonlinear wave equations in Anti-de Sitter spacetime). Our analysis provides an additional conserved quantity for all of these systems, which has been previously known for the resonant system of the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, but not for any other cases.
