All Kinds of Things - August 30, 2019 @goldenoakfarm

The girls, hatched May 1, have laid their first egg on August 29th. As the nestboxes are blocked off, it was in the dustbath. An extra large for comparison.

Clean!

I did get up to the butchershop this morning, but with one thing and another, I kept getting pulled away: broken lever on the pasture coop (2 trips out there), BuyNothing pickup (she took some of the old chicken carcasses for stock), and several other things.

My helper friend showed up at 8:30 and we went to work and finished in a timely manner, before it got hot in there. Friday evening I closed the windows to keep some of the dust out. I won’t have to clean again until 6AM Sunday morning.

Diamond Arcadia cabinets for laundry and pantry

Once I’d recovered and showered we headed over to Lowe’s for the last cabinet order. They were having a Labor Day sale. I’d selected a color and style from the lowest end cabinets. She priced them, over $5000! Sticker shock!

So I emphasized these cabinets were not in public rooms, they could be the cheapest ones. So she priced up the sale ones and we looked at them. There are some things I didn’t like, such as a drawer on top of a couple I didn’t want drawers on, and the utility cabinets weren’t set up for brooms, etc.

Nicer ones for the office, Diamond Caspian

But the price for 9 cabinets, with 3 sort of nicer ones for the office, was $1951. So she saved us over $3000.

My husband hadn’t brought his first lumber order, as the contractors had not shown up. He got a text from them while in the store saying he could bring in lumber, it would not be in their way now.

So he went home, transferred money to the checking, and got his order and went back. He paid for the cabinets, no problem. But the check for lumber was declined. We’d gone through this before on previous orders, but in the end got it to be okayed. Not this time.

So I called the bank and discovered, even though the money is there, you have to be authorized for big purchases, each time. Security measure, which I suppose I am glad about, but still….

So they authorized the check and he went back over and paid for his lumber.

Construction - new sump crop August 2019.jpg

Remember the sump area got concreted in? And we selected this corner for the new sump area? Well, when they installed the interior drain they put in this sump. Not exactly what my husband had in mind, but it is supposed to be a back up to an interior and exterior draining system, and supposedly we will never need it.

My husband got the middle pasture mowed on Friday, so we could move the pen on Saturday morning.

Evening on the farm

The broilers love this time of day, as it is cool and the bugs are out. They are doing a final clean-up before being put to bed for the night.

And so ends another day on the farm.

You have an amazing farm! Each glimpse you give us of it helps me get a better picture of just what you are doing over there.
Butcher shop? So clean!
Yes everything has a bureaucratic hassle built into the process now. So frustrating.
May you never need your sump pump.

That pasture looks like it would have taken a little while to mow! That's no little backyard you've got to keep on top of.
