I think that would be possibly one of the best things that could happen to the steem codebase. Multiple data formats/models, rewards structures, and experiments to really test how best to use a content based blockchain.
Competition isn't something to be scared of, it's something to spur competition and innovation, and drive you to success.

If it were removed, there would be nothing stopping the community from fracturing and splitting off to form a new coin, correct?
