TIL: Dan Larimer left STEEM because it was unfixable.

in #eos7 years ago

... starting over with new blockchains is not something I do lightly. I do it only when there are intractable problems with the underlying foundation.

I realize Dan did not directly say that STEEM was unfixable. And Dan has been annoyed in the past when people read into what he says. Maybe Dan isn't saying that STEEM is unfixable. Maybe he's saying that the current state of the platform has problems he cannot personally fix.

Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to EOS.

Sort:

He has had more then enough information and input on the things that need fixing, He didnt have the want to fix the issues because the real issues wernt the problem to him. He Was one of the biggest supporters of censorship on this site (and he openly says it in his early posts) and had no want to stop the stuff the majority of users (not whales) talked about.

He tried to hide the flagging problem by changing the number of flags to dots and by making it so you couldnt see the full list of upvoters and flaggers unless you go to a differnt fromt side interface.

"It is broken to him" because he didnt end up with an echo chamber like he openly said he wanted in the firs couple months of steemit.

I wouldnt be supprised if eos ends up the same, same group of whales getting into it before the public has access and the moment the users of the block chain disagree with anything dan wants he either runs them off or throws his hands up in the air and yells fuck it while he runs around attacking anyone that "isnt on his side".

The less people in the upper 10% power range acting like they are policing steemit for good the better, they arent doing it for good they are doing it to make steemit how they want regardless of what everyone else thinks.

IMO atleast.
lol

He didn't have anything to do with the dots. That's a UI thing. But I think you're referring to the fact that 1 flag issued by 1 STEEM has less impact than 1 flag issued by 10 STEEM. You don't like that, right? Me, I think that's perfectly appropriate for this platform since it's a stake weighted system where 1 vote is equal to 1 STEEM.

So you think the 1:1 ERC20 distribution will not be honored? How is that Dan's fault if it's not?

No the weight of the steem isnt my problem. I was not aware that he had nothing to do with the ui changes, i for some reason thought he had final say in everything. obviously i thought he had alot more to do with what was going on then he did.

So you think the 1:1 ERC20 distribution will not be honored? How is that Dan's fault if it's not?

honstly i have no cule about that stuff, was just refering to his attatude towards people that disagree with him and the stuff he openly posted in the early days about how anyone that doesnt agree with anything he says at any time should be ostrizized and punished by way of fininacial negitive reinforcement and by way of the system it would work because anyone that did no go along with the "shunning" and ostriziation of the person would also come under the same fate.

As for weight of steem power, If we were to really have the conversation of it shouldnt we start at the preminimg* (mining of steempower before the system was open to the public and all mining stopped) and how the whales didnt gain their power posting like everyone else but for some reason they feel they have the entitlement to go around and deciede what is quality content when they dont make their steempower and money from posting but by renting out premined power and having people pay for upvotes cause if they dont and arent liked by the preminers the payouts will be removed?
O.o
I mean i understand power corrupts, doesnt mean i have to like it or that i have to agree with it.

I can almost say with pure certinity that what ever issue he wants to say is why steemit is broke a couple people have come up with solutions to fix it. I guess it all depends on what issues you think are the problem i guess.

IDK im an ignorant noob only going off the little bit of stuff dan posted in the early days of steem about his idea of of what he was trying to create and i have no clue about eos as the first couple days dan was talking about it i asked how to buy some and was basically told to fuck off. lol I even posted asking how to buy some and didnt get a single answer. could have been reading into it to much but it felt like they were making sure i didnt buy any. lol
Could just be my paranoia conspiercy brain.

:D
sorry bout the book long replies and ill prolly stop talking about this stuff now as i dont feel like having my account killed buy the whales again for presenting my warped opinion in public. Thanks for putting up with me.

Cheers and sorry for messing up the comment section of your post with my stupid.

mining of steempower before the system was open to the public and all mining stopped

That is no longer a valid point. They held down to 7¢. They deserve every last STEEM they have.

How is it not a valid point?
it is true, but whatever.
us talking about it isnt going to change anything IMO.

Thanks for putting up with my stupidity.
:D

I stand corrected:

Also unfixable from a distribution perspective.

Says @dan. So it was a reason he left, apparently. But I still disagree that it has any relavence to the platform now. They held their stake down to 7¢ and anyone who believed in the fundamentals could have swooped in and took a relative position much greater than the initial distribution.

Lets agree to disagree.
:D
saves you from my stupid and saves me from saying something that might get my account killed again.
lol

apa macam ini

TBH if the 1:1 ERC20 distribution isn't honored then EOS is fucked from the start. We'll certainly see, though i'm focused on hopeful positivity with my 100 EOS :P

First time I have ever been able to listen to a full "Dan Interview". He is getting much better at communication.

I heard what he said as: "It was broken to me".

He had new things he wanted to achieve and we didn't understand why.. He couldn't drag us, so he flew...

Yeah, after watching more, I think he just meant that the unfixable problem is that he can't build the kinds of applications he wants on top of STEEM or BitShares. If that's true, he worded it very poorly.

Dan already said he had plan to create EOS even before Steem was created. I'm not sure I remember this right though.

Also he never said Steem can't be fixed. He said he wasn't successful at solving it because we wasn't listened to.

Vast majority of steem users are great, but the steem that exists today is not what I created with its linear reward curve. I did try to fix it, but the community was very much against it and so was Steemit inc which no longer wished to follow my advice. I always try to fix past creations before moving on.

Unfixable due to fundamental transaction structure. Would require a pitch fork. Also unfixable from a distribution perspective.

Do you think steem as its current state (no consensus) should move to delegated byzantine fault tolerance?

https://themerkle.com/what-is-delegated-byzantine-fault-tolerance/

NEO is using this algorithm and seems doing really well as a protocol

Yep! I'm following you dude. - You're one I need to learn from. 👊@dan

Well I think if I were to interpret him it would be that he tries to say that currently the influx of new users in steemit would be the reason why steem will have problem being fixed, I'm I a little correct?

Are we in for a rough ride? @inertia?

Nope. Scalability isn't a concern. And they're working on Velocity to address the sign-up bottleneck.

Oh is that the case? Quite a relieve then, you're amazing for letting me onto this information, thank you

What about an individuals ability to purchase a server and run a portion of the network with possibility of winning the raffle... I'd love to support the platform, I have $ towards a server... But the current requirements for a casual supporter are out of sight.. these requirements are putting more and more power in the hands of the few again. Obviously. If ipfs had a rewarded by content requests based system with a round robin style rewards vs top 100.. I mean 20... Like myself, I'm currently working on a react app and I'm questioning if I need to run my own servers or if I can rely on the system for what it was meant to do.. if I'm incorrect please educate me, I'd love to have more support in information here..

It was interesting to hear Dan talking about what brought him into the blockchain space in the first place (Ron Paul and all that), I think this has allot to do with why he left Steem and what he meant when he said it was broken. I always suspected that Dan was actively involved in making Steemit have a very certain political stance up to that point ( namely alt.right ). I imagine that he and Ned did not see things eye to eye in this respect and this is why he left. I don’t think he meant to say that Steem is broken from a technological perspective.

Also, Dan is clearly a novelty seeker who loses interest in projects once they reach a certain maturity level. So maybe his decision to move along is actually a proof of maturity for Steem. Things have changed a lot here since he left ( Gosh, it is hard to believe that that was only less than a year ago ), and I think it was only for the better.

Having said all that, I also have to say think Dan Larimer is one of the most brilliant minds of the blockchain arena today. I trust his calls and I believe EOS is going to be a great success.

If tommorow he'd say that he is tired of eos and would like to start from scratch another time our crazy markets would give him another set of billions to do so. He has this path of less resistance, he uses it regularly.

Fine with me. I'll make money either way.

EOS baby... Lets go!... Dan is a genius.

in this era of tech, when what happened between Dan and Ned sprung up new and good idea. i never listened to Dan larimer before

Interesting thoughts. I wouldn't fully agree with that though.

Come on. Sure you do.

I'm looking forward to watching the EOS price when it launches!
