Exclusive on Steemit - Curious find at the Chelyabinsk event.

Research has been published reporting the discovery of a type of crystals "never seen before" that were hidden in small grains of meteoric dust left behind by the space rock that exploded over Chelyabinsk in Russia in 2013.

Let us remember that this happened in February 2013, a small asteroid about 18 meters wide and about 12 thousand 125 tons, entered the earth's atmosphere at 66 thousand nine hundred fifty kilometers per hour, the asteroid exploded at about 23 kilometers high over the city of Chelyabinsk located in southern Russia.

The interesting thing is that when it exploded, the entire area was pulverized and bathed with small meteorites, mostly the size of dust, which ultimately turned out very well because it avoided a direct impact with the surface, although unfortunately there was also damage and injured, in fact, experts say that this explosion is the largest that has occurred on earth of a meteoric origin since the Tunguska event in 1908.

In this explosion they have calculated that the energy was about 30 times greater than that of the atomic bomb that shook Hiroshima, in addition to causing damage and injuring 1,200 people in the city due to a sonic stampede that broke the windows, since many people he had leaned out the windows to see the glow.

The light of the event arrives much earlier than the sonic boom than the shock wave and that wave was the one that ended up breaking the crystals and the crystals fell on top of the people, so the 1200 people who were injured were mostly due to glass breakage, in the event of an asteroid impact asteroid remember that the first thing to do is not to lean out of a window.

The impact did not leave a block of the fireball, it was pulverized and luckily there are small fragments that have been recovered and with them a new study has been carried out where the researchers analyzed these small fragments that remained after the Chelyabinsk meteorite exploded, generating a huge column of dust that remained suspended in the atmosphere for more than four days before finally falling to earth.

But how to differentiate between the normal dust that is on the ground, from the dust of an asteroid, because this time the scientists were lucky, because it turns out that in those days it snowed and the snow and the snow trapped and differentiated the dust that was in the atmosphere at that time that was a product of the asteroid from the rest of the normal dust that was on the ground, that asteroid dust was recovered by scientists and in it they found some tiny and strange crystals with two different shapes.

These curious crystals have two forms, an almost spherical shell shape, and others that are shaped like hexagonal rods, the scientists did an x-ray analysis that revealed that the crystals were made of layers of graphite, graphite is a form of carbon made with overlapping sheets of atoms, graphite is found in everyday pencils, but curiously, it is also the one used to create graphene; investigations will continue to reveal whether these crystals were formed by the impact or were already formed.
