Magical Cantabria: the Broken Coast and the Urros of Liencres
We continue our adventure through the lands of Cantabria, looking for those places, of strong magnetism due to their immeasurable beauty, charged, how could it be otherwise, by all the strength that both legend and tradition always give.
And we do it, continuing our journey through an area of the coast, which, due to its spectacular nature, as well as its indomitable tear, in antediluvian times, it is no coincidence that it responds to the arrogant nickname of Broken Coast.
To do this, we will leave behind the sumptuous capital of Cantabria, Santander and, approximately a dozen kilometers away, we will make a long stop in the heart of this impressive geographical feature, taking the beautiful town of Liencres as our base of operations.
Liencres, like many other towns located in places that we could well call privileged, has also been altered by the massive arrival of tourism, eager for nature and adventure, which has caused, as in many Spanish Levante coasts, the proliferation of hotels and residences, which, although they partly break the natural charm of this wonderful environment, generate income for the municipality, not inconsiderable, so it is not strange to see a good part of its rural urbanity modified, with newly created elements , among which it is worth noting the installation of supermarkets and not a few catering establishments, both modern and traditional, which guarantee all the necessary services, especially in summer, where a massive influx of holidaymakers is detected.
But apart from this possible inconvenience, the truth is that Liencres is a phenomenal destination from which to explore a good part of the most spectacular Cantabrian coast, with its wild coves, its extensive golden sand beaches and above all, with that immeasurable natural park, which bears the name of the Dunes of Liencres and whose beauty, despite the action of man, leaves no one indifferent.
They receive the name of Urros, some peculiar islets, which the continuous erosion of the tides has molded, giving them spectacular shapes, where you can also play with the perspective that the paraidolias always offer -appreciate certain shapes, which at some point could seem artificially sculpted- being the most appreciable place to see them and enjoy their imposing beauty, from the paths of the cliffs that converge on the so-called Arnia beach.
These formations, which in the past came to form authentic stone cathedrals, in some cases, connected by small arches - where the Devil, as in many other places on the Iberian Peninsula, takes part as architect and, at the same time, as executor of those daring who are inclined one day to try to climb them- that the inclement weather has been modifying and in many cases, finishing knocking down - such as the one known as La Horadada- are, in addition, the refuge of many species of seabirds, in the same way that in the past and in the imagination of the people, they formed the indisputable habitat, above all, in the mentality of the fishermen who fished in the dangerous waters around, of fantastic beings, whose mysterious existence, somehow , has always accompanied the adventure of humanity, such as the mermaids who reveled in them and the anjanas or nymphs of the fountains, who used the caves and openings as their residence. and his fantastic constitution.
