Dream A Little Dream of Me: Who did it best?

in #music2 years ago (edited)

I just heard a song on my Pandora channel, that I thought would give us a fun question...

Who did the best song version of Dream a Little Dream of Me?

ArtistVideo
Doris Day
Cass Elliot
Nicole Kidman
Ozzie Nelson

Fun fact: I just learned from the link above that Doris Day and my mom had the same birthday (different years).

Anyway, back to the topic: which one is my favorite?

It's a tough call. Obviously they all have great voices. I just heard the original Ozzie Nelson (of Ozzie and Harriet fame) version today for the first time. And until recently, I only knew of the Cass Elliot version. I had that on 8-track tape back in the day. But now I'm sort-of partial to Doris Day with Nicole Kidman in a very close second.

I like the stylistic changes that Kidman made to it, but her version sounds a little bit "overproduced" to me. She also has an acapella version, but I like to have some accompaniment. In the Doris Day version, I really like the way that the piano complements her voice and style. Maybe it's not fair to Mama Cass since I had it on tape, but I've already heard her version so many times, that it just seems a little bit plain to me. And it's hard to get a real sense of the Ozzie Nelson version on a recording with a scratchy record from the 1930s.

So, which version is your favorite, and why? Or do you prefer a version by someone else?

I think I know who @cmp2020 will pick.

Sort:

I'll go for Nicole Kidman version...,the beats in the sound track adds more life to that music.

However, I also like the jazz prelude in Ozzie Nelson's version.

Or do you prefer a version by someone else?

I can't say, till I hear another one.

Maybe if @cmp2020 would like to do a version for the 21st century with his piano that could be interesting too.

Speaking of jazz, @cmp2020 also reminded me of one by Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald... A couple of legends. This one should definitely be in the running, too. ;-)

Ozzie Nelson , It's my choice

I would love to vote for Cass Elliott, the song she sang and her singing style I loved and the last one from Ozzie Nelson was instrumental tune for long time and later I find the song was sang. I like coincidences like the birth date of your mom n Doris Day is similar, likely America's Independence day and my birthday is a same day and its 4th of July!!! (Different year) 🙂
