The aerospace company Lockheed Martin has successfully ruptured a prototype of an inflatable habitation module for Earth orbit or the Moon and Mars.

The shell collapsed when the pressure inside it exceeded six times the maximum allowable value.

NASA commissioned private space companies to develop prototypes of astronaut living modules back in 2016 as part of the NextSTEP-2 (Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships-2) program.

Six companies were selected, and one of them was Lockheed Martin.

Then, in 2018 Lockheed Martin presented a project for a residential module for space expeditions based on a capsule of a multi-purpose supply module.

Subsequently, the company turned its attention to the technology of creating inflatable residential modules.

These structures can be used both in near-Earth orbit and on the surface of the Moon or Mars, and they are compact when folded.

In mid-December 2022, the company conducted development tests on a prototype inflatable module to determine the maximum internal pressure that the shell can withstand.

During the testing, the prototype was equipped with hundreds of sensors, and high-speed cameras monitored the inflation process.

The tests were considered successful: the prototype of the residential module burst at a pressure of almost 20 atmospheres.

This is more than six times the maximum working pressure inside the module.

I hadn't realised Lockheed Martin were involved in space work - I thought they were mainly about defence and weapons. But I guess there is a big overlap.

After 5 years on the platform I have recently launched a Steem witness - @pennsif.witness.

You may know me for Steem News, which is now nearing its 500th edition.

As a witness I am running a Full API Node and a Seed Node. Together with the @steemwow team I have also launched Press4Steem, a plugin to connect WordPress sites with Steem.

It would be great if you are able to support my work by giving one of your witness votes to @pennsif.witness.

If you have any questions about Steem, or if I can help you with anything please contact me on Discord at @Pennsif#9921.

Thank you

Pennsif

Yeah! Lockheed Martin were also involved in the aerospace industry. I actually knew them for their space related R&D and later read they were big players in the defence industry.

I'll look for your user as witness. Thank you for letting me know.

Merry Christmas!

Lockheed Martin are definitely keeping busy on the defence side now!

Thank you for supporting @pennsif.witness. It is much appreciated.

My first job out of college was with GE Aerospace in the 1980s. Later, they got bought by Martin Marietta, and MM subsequently merged with Lockheed to become Lockheed Martin. Makes me wonder if this was developed in one of the buildings where I used to work.

How cool is that! You have experience are in aerospace.
