DONOSTIA-SAN SEBASTIÁN - A Crowded Paradise [EN/DE]

Hi folks! As promised, I tell you today about my day trip to Donostia-San Sebástian and to anticipate it right away, this city has fascinated and amazed me incredibly!

Hallo Leute! Wie versprochen, erzähle ich euch heute von meinem Tagesausflug nach Donostia-San Sebastián und um es gleich vorwegzunehmen, diese Stadt hat mich unglaublich fasziniert und begeistert!

After arriving at the underground bus station, I headed straight for the city centre and crossed the beautifully designed bridge Puente Maria Cristina. It leads over the river Urumea which flows into the sea here.

Nach der Ankunft beim unterirdischen Busbahnhof machte ich mich gleich auf den Weg Richtung Stadtzentrum und überquerte dabei die wunderschön gestaltete Brücke Puente Maria Cristina. Sie führt über den Fluss Urumea, der hier ins Meer mündet.

Walking through the chic, well-kept pedestrian zones, past the huge neo-gothic cathedral, it already became clear to me how vibrant this city is in the middle of summer. But in reality this was only a small foretaste...

Beim Spaziergang durch die schicken, gepflegten Fussgängerzonen, vorbei an der riesigen neogotischen Kathedrale, offenbarte sich mir bereits, wie belebt diese Stadt im Hochsommer ist. Doch in Wirklichkeit war das erst ein kleiner Vorgeschmack…

I will probably never forget the moment when I stood in front of it for the first time: "La Concha" - that's the name of the 1.3 km long bay of Donostia-San Sebastian with its almost as long beach. The beach area is unbelievable 54.000m²!

Ich werde wohl nie den Moment vergessen, an dem ich das erste mal vor ihr stand: „La Concha“ - so der Name der 1,3 Kilometer langen Bucht von Donostia-San Sebastian mit ihrem fast ebenso langen Strand. Die Strandfläche beträgt unglaubliche 54.000m²!

I don't know how many thousands of people enjoyed this wonderful summer day here, but the sight was simply overwhelming. I had to pick up my jaw from the ground before I continued towards the old town.

Ich weiß nicht wie viele tausend Menschen hier diesen herrlichen Sommertag genossen, aber der Anblick war einfach überwältigend. Ich musste meine Kinnlade erstmal vom Boden aufsammeln, bevor ich weiter Richtung Altstadt ging.

What a gorgeous old town, but here one could definitely describe the alleys as crowded. In fact, with the exception of Venice, I can't remember any other city where I'd seen such crowds of tourists in such a small area.

Was für eine wunderbare Altstadt, aber hier konnte man die Gassen nun endgültig als überfüllt bezeichnen. Tatsächlich kann ich mich, mit Ausnahme von Venedig, an keine andere Stadt erinnern, in der ich solche Touristenmassen auf so engen Raum gesehen hatte.

The bay of La Concha has a hill with a fantastic view at both ends. Because of my limited time I had to choose one of them and selected Monte Urgull. Halfway to the highest point I reached a viewing platform with a view of the river mouth and another large beach, which was almost as crowded. The view was simply phenomenal!

Die Bucht von La Concha hat an beiden Enden einen Berg mit traumhafter Aussicht. Wegen meiner begrenzten Zeit musste ich mich für einen der beiden entscheiden und wählte den Monte Urgull. Auf halber Strecke zum höchsten Punkt erreichte ich eine Aussichtsplattform mit Blick auf die Flussmündung und einen weiteren weitläufigen Strand, der fast ebenso gut besucht war. Der Ausblick war einfach phänomenal!

After a short but exhausting walk I arrived at the fortress on the top of Monte Urgull and enjoyed the wonderful view of the city, the bay and the turquoise blue sea.

Nach einem kurzen aber anstrengenden Fussmarsch kam ich dann bei der Festungsanlage auf dem Gipfel des Monte Urgull an und genoß ausgiebig die wunderschöne Aussicht auf die Stadt, die Bucht und das türkisblaue Meer.

At the end I walked on the soft sand in the shallow water along the beach, before I started the one and a half hour drive back to Bilbao by bus.

Zum Abschluss spazierte ich noch auf dem weichen Sand im seichten Wasser den Strand entlang, bevor ich die eineinhalbstündige Rückfahrt mit dem Bus nach Bilbao antrat.

What an incredible city! I would love to return immediately and spend at least one week in Donostia-San Sebastián. There is still so much to discover and the one or other afternoon at this amazing beach would also be tempting. In any case, even after this short trip it was already clear to me that the list of my favourite European cities had a new entry!

Was für eine unglaubliche Stadt! Am liebsten würde ich sofort wieder zurückkehren und mindestens eine Woche in Donostia-San Sebastián verbringen. Es gäbe noch so viel zu entdecken und der ein oder andere Nachmittag an diesem unfassbaren Strand wäre auch verlockend. Auf jeden Fall stand schon nach diesem kurzen Ausflug für mich fest, die Liste meiner Lieblingsstädte Europas hat einen neuen Eintrag!
