An Immortal Tale

"When the Watchdogs are chasing after you, just remember the escape routes we've explored yesterday. And remember, here in our home no one can harm us. Now, close your eyes and have sweet dreams dear."

Mother was always right; there's nothing to worry about when we're at home. In all the countless ages our family has lived here, there's never been a case where a loved one was lost at home. No, those tragic events are exclusive to the Evil Outside World. Unfortunately, survival demands visiting that evil place each and every day, so, in his mind Pucker reviewed the escape routes one last time before falling into the deep sleep enjoyed by those who give it their all.

Although yesterday was Pucker's first day outside, the escape routes have been described and discussed many times before. It was tradition in the family to use the first day "out there" for a thorough exploration of these life saving routes, all ending at the absolute safety of home. There the family could breathe easy, enjoy each others company, listen to the tales told by the grandparents and not worry about the evil Gods out there, or their terrible Watchdogs.

During breakfast the next day, Pucker and the rest of the family were once again treated by grandfather's favorite tale of how his father narrowly escaped from the Red Watchdog by taking a gamble never before tried; he left the known path of one of the best escape routes to avoid a deadly claw and crossed a less known area to end up on the halfway mark of another well known escape route, which he could then follow home to safety. Gramps always seemed slightly larger when telling that story; he must be very proud, because the heroic escape from certain death by his father resulted in a new escape route that's now being past to the generations to follow.

The Gods have not one, but two Watchdogs patrolling their world, one Red and one Black. Yes, these were particularly hard times for the family. Old stories still tell of times long past when the Gods were content to use just one Watchdog. Sure, that one Watchdog was a really mean one; with a majestic Silver and brown skin and hypnotizing eyes of the most wonderful blue ever seen, it's eerie elegance and beauty were only trumped by it's utter evil and mercilessness. But now there's two of them and they've been killing and mutilating family members since the days of Pucker's great great great grandfather at least. Standing in the round door, ready to take his first solo trip outside, Pucker took a deep breath and left the house thinking "Maybe I'll see one of the Gods today. Or maybe I'll spot one of the Watchdogs... But I'm not a kid anymore, and no one ever claimed that the life of a mouse is easy: let's do this!"

Moral of the story? Immortality is in the eye of the beholder. Grandpa mouse is two years old, maximum. Pucker, our reluctant hero, can be no more than two months old; house mice live to a maximum average of 24 months. A pet cat has a life span of approximately 13 to 17 years and they are obviously the Watchdogs in Pucker's universe, and we also know that the Gods, the human inhabitants of his universe, long ago had a different "Watchdog", probably a Siamese cat called "Silver" by the mouse family. Seen from the mouse's perspective, the Watchdogs are demi-Gods and the Humans of the house are Gods; they've ALWAYS been there, they're the eternal rulers in their universe and the subject of many mythological tales being transferred to each new mouse-generation.

There are many alternative histories of mankind, and many old traditions speak of god-like creatures in our collective past that lived for hundreds, sometimes thousands of years. The Old Testament describes the first generations after Adam and Eve as living for hundreds of years; Methusalem lived almost 1000 years... 5000 year old clay tablets from modern day Iraq speak of the Anunaki, a race that ruled over mankind like Gods and may even have created humans through genetic manipulation. In the Garden of Eden there was also a Tree of Life, not just the Tree of Knowledge... Could is be that this tree of knowledge really means that the Gods don't want us humans to know the secret of long or eternal life? After eating from that other tree, we humans were cast out of Eden after all...

I don't know, I just thought it was kind of interesting to see immortality as a relative thing. Is DNA our ticket to longer life spans? Will we be able to manufacture living cells? Will we conquer the code of life, and therefore conquer death? I have many reasons why I hope that's not the case, but I'm only one man that knows nothing. Still, I think it's fascinating to ponder on these questions. Are we Gods? Or are we mice?
