The power of art is beautiful
We learn that it is not always beneficial for us to show ourselves as we are and we learn to hide our feelings. The deeper these are, the more we try to hide them.
We start by hiding our most intimate feelings from others and end up hiding them from ourselves.
The Western educational systems have always insisted that the correct thing is to hide the feelings and remain undaunted when faced with any kind of stimulus that provokes our sensitivity.
In such a way we have made an effort during all our learning to hide that we have lost the sensitivity necessary to them. We do not realize until they reach a certain degree of intensity from which we can no longer subtract. But possibly, in many cases, it is already too late.
This insensitivity to our own deepest feelings makes us become cold and insensitive to the joy or pain of others, to beauty or horror. We lose spontaneity and the vital energy to be more creative, to enjoy more of life.
There are some means to overcome this "blockage" of our senses and to become more aware of our deepest feelings.
The most important of these methods is any type of artistic expression.
Both painting, poetry, dance, sculpture, music, etc., especially when we simply focus on what is pure and simple expression, above all other aesthetic considerations, endows us with a series of cerebral mechanisms that allow to release to a large extent those feelings more hidden, more cloistered.
The artistic expression as a method of personal introspection does not need more than a few technical rudiments in these arts, since as we have already mentioned the goal is not to achieve works of art, but to serve as a channel for the expression of personal feelings and that of another way they could never come out.
This type of use of art has nothing to do with that made by artists, professionals of each of the arts, whose purpose is the realization of aesthetically valuable works. In this case, that artistic expression has much more to do with the intellect, with the intellectual recreation of a work of art, and much less with feelings.
For the purpose before us it is not necessary to be artistically endowed or have special artistic skills. On the contrary, the ignorance of the rules, of the methods, of the materials will give our acts more expressiveness and intuition.
The artistic disciplines will help us in this way to find the way to express ourselves with total freedom and independence from the limitations that education and social coexistence have imposed on us.
To save the conventions, the corsets to which we are accustomed will undoubtedly give us a greater vitality and creative force to live in all its intensity.
If someone feels that their art is somehow not "good enough", they could start with geometric designs that then morph into a kind of sigil, or motif - perhaps a symbol of a feeling rather than a scene.
