most probably they left the village in order to save the honor of that poor girl..
What I learnt from this story is that in old times, people were united and they cared for each other, that is why the whole village left that area combinedly. No one will anything like that nowadays. Pure people and pure Love is missing in this materialistic era.
I don't think that there is any curse there, the possible reasons that this area is still not inhabited can be the scarcity of water or may be it's a side area which is far away from city.
