Big Magic, by Elizabeth Gilbert - Flash Review

Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear. If any writer makes you feel like you and she are suddenly best friends, it's Elizabeth Gilbert. I loved Eat, Pray, Love (many didn't, and she and I are aware of that!), and I follow her on social media. The woman has lived and when she speaks, she just makes sense.

Big Magic is a book for creative people, and like many books on finding your creative self, that means YOU. Yes, you are a creative person. Everyone is. Whether we like it or not. But most importantly, it's a book for people who want the reignite that flame of creativity inside themselves. This is not a 'How To' by any means, so if you're looking for some life-hacks they aren't here. However, even better than that, it's a book that reminds you of that time you did something creative, whether you made a birthday card, wrote a poem, went to that dance class, or did some finger painting with the kids, and how good that made you feel. You are encouraged to explore that creativity and that curiosity.

"Do whatever brings you to life, then. Follow your own fascinations, obsessions, and compulsions. Trust them. Create whatever causes a revolution in your heart. The rest of it will take care of itself."

It's a quick read. I read a chapter every morning to let her words sink in and applied her thinking to each day that passed. It's a book that I will definitely revisit from time to time, to have it as a reminder to stay creative, even if all I can muster on any given day is some colouring or a sing-song with myself!
