The Five Best Books of 2017
The choice of Bill Gates...
Every year businessman and philanthropist Bill Gates talks about the books he read and chooses the most interesting.
- "The best we could do"
A graphic novel from the American illustrator Ti Bui. She tells what difficulties her family encountered during the civil war in South Vietnam, and how they moved to the United States.
"These are very deep personal memories. The book reveals to us what it's like to be a parent and a refugee, "Gates says.
- "Evicted"
The author of the book, Matthew Desmond, analyzes the totality of causes that cause poverty. As an example, he considers the rental crisis in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In this city, every year because of the regular increase in rent and insufficient growth in incomes, up to 16,000 people are subjected to evictions and are on the street.
"Desmond made a very accurate portrait of Americans who live in poverty. His book helped me better than others to understand what it means to be poor in our country, "Gates writes.
- "Believe me"
The book is an autobiography of the English stand-up comedian Eddie Izzard. He talks about his childhood, about the fight against dyslexia, and about the difficulties that he had to overcome before he became a famous artist.
"If you also like Izzard, you will certainly appreciate this book. His author's voice is similar to scenic: during the reading, I often laughed at the voice, "- says Bill Gates.
- "Sympathetic"
The author Viet Tang Nguyen tells the story of a nameless double agent who emigrated from Vietnam to the United States shortly after the fall of Saigon and the victory of pro-communist forces.
"Most books and films about the Vietnam War reflect the American point of view. And Nguyen suggests looking at the conflict through the eyes of a Vietnamese, sandwiched between two opposing sides, "Gates writes.
- "Energy and civilization"
According to the author, the Canadian researcher Vaclav Smila, energy is the only universal currency of mankind. In the book he tells how different types of fuel shaped the face of human civilization: from the ancient world to the modern era.
"This is not the easiest book, but it will make you smarter," Gates concludes.
