The airport was built in 2000, completed in 2003 and commenced operations in 2004. and after the development of the airport was inaugurated by President Jokowi on March 2, 2016. and currently the airport has served Rembele-Kualanamu Kormersil flights ( PP) using the Wing Air airline. The construction of the airport is expected to facilitate the mobility of people and goods from Bener Meriah Regency to Central Aceh and Medan, which previously had to use the road transportation mode which takes 12 hours, with aircraft only takes 45 minutes.
