Vegetable Oil, Cholesterol, Saturation
So let's talk about Vegetable oil.
We see most companies advertising their vegetable oil and telling us it has zero cholesterol. Fine. I mean, pure vegetable oil isn't supposed to have even a tiny bit of cholesterol because cholesterol isn't found in plants. It's present only in animals. Cholesterol is very important in the body, but we don't need it in our diet because our bodies can synthesize it!
Excess cholesterol in the body can lead to heart diseases, artherosclerosis and even stroke!!
But then, I discovered that some vegetable oils been sold contain high levels of saturated fatty acids. Recent studies have shown that saturated fatty acids lead to increased cholesterol production. It has also been linked to increased risk of artherosclerosis and heart diseases.
On the other hand, unsaturated fatty acids, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) is esfterified to cholesterol in our bodies, and so help our bodies get rid of excess cholesterol.
Now, saturated fatty acids are fatty acids with no double bonds in their structure. They are "saturated" with hydrogen atoms. Unsaturated fatty acids on the other hand, have double bonds.
So next time you to the grocery store, be sure to check the labels and pick up the vegetable oil with a higher percentage of unsaturated fat than saturated.
And don't forget that fats and oils, like most other food substances, cause lots of problems when consumed in high amounts. So you might want to keep the fried foods consumption in check.
