i think making your own cob planters is a BRILLIANT idea - and one i am going to try myself! i've been getting recycled plastic/resin containers for a while now, and they've lasted for a while, but what do you do once they wear out? you've gotta plan for that too.
we're looking into carving out some big stumps & planting some flowers in there, possibly doing straw bale planting, and getting berries on some hugelkultur beds.
If you do this, PLEASE post your pictures and how-to! I think this could solve so many problems for so many people. I also think it's good to have some small-scale experience with primitive building techniques just in case.
