Fire

We heat our home in the winter (Midwest, US) primarily with wood. We have a masonry stove in which we burn about 13 kg of wood in the morning and another 13 kg of wood in the evening. The rest of the time the mass emanates the heat to the house. It gets pretty hot in the fire box. I "borrowed" some pyrometric cones from a friend to see how hot it got. I put five cones in the fire ranging from Cone 03 to Cone 9. None of them tipped or even sagged. But see how the cast iron grate has sagged in the photo (the doors are made with 1/4" cold-rolled steel plate and ceramic glass)? IMG_20180104_094200-scaled.jpg

This is after about 5 weeks of daily use. We go through at least two of the grates in a heating season.

I would love to hear your suggestions for keeping the firewood off the "floor" of the firebox.
