Welcome Home Criminals - Housing - City of Seattle
City of Seattle is essentially attempting to do away with criminal background screening for rental applicants.
How do you feel about the potential of apartment neighbors having a recent and potentially serious criminal record and obtaining housing right next door to you, your family or maybe your elderly parents?
As an asset holder, how do you feel about being forced to rent to households that may bring a potentially expensive and negative element to your investment?
Do you have thoughts or suggestions regarding protecting people’s rights without infringing on the rights of others?
That is interesting, but if it were up to me, I would deregulate the whole rental industry in the case where two adults make a decision to rent a space, I am not sure why anyone else needs to be involved.
It's unfortunate that the additional government involvement was likely necessary not too long ago in our history. In my opinion, sometimes a movement based on a good or needed cause, takes an ugly turn and the very thing that is meant to improve a situation, becomes distorted and hinders the natural process. The social consequence of business decisions is inevitable. However, this legislation will fine landlords between $11,000 and $55,000 for any instance deemed as an unlawful rental practice.
