Every Super-Hero Movie of 2017 Ranked From Best To Worst
2017 was a strong year for superhero movies. It delivered us the first major female led superhero movie (which also happened to be the first almost universally liked movie in the DC extended universe) and the first R-rated Western superhero movie with Logan. Below are my personal choices for the best and worst superhero films of the year, starting with the worst.
#6. Justice League
While not as bad as Batman V Superman or Suicide Squad, and featuring solid performances from Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Mamoa and a scene stealing Ezra Miller as The Flash, and finally introducing some decent humor into the DCEU, Justice League was still an overblown mess featuring a terrible looking and utterly forgettably bland CGI villain.
#5. Wonder Woman
Gal Gadot shines in the titular role in a movie that brought hope and wonder to the DCEU. The final act unfortunately devolves into a CGI mess but the now infamous No Man's Land scene alone is worth the price of admission.
#4. Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2
While not quite hitting the highs of it's predecessor, Guardians 2 still manages to be a very funny, very enjoyable space adventure once again giving us a stellar soundtrack, fun and exciting action sequences, solid belly laughs and most importantly: a dancing Baby Groot.
#3. Spider-Man: Homecoming
The third Spider-Man incarnation in 10 years still managed to feel fresh and exciting. Mostly thanks to the decision to set it firmly as a high school movie. It also helps that Tom Holland is the best casting of the character yet. Tobey Maguire was a great Peter Parker. And Andrew Garfield was a good Spider-Man. But Holland balances the wise-cracking confident superhero with the shy nerdy teenager perfectly. Michael Keaton also makes it a hat trick in his great performances playing winged animal themed superhero movie characters.
#2. Thor: Ragnorak
The first two Thor movies were enjoyable but were the only of Marvel's main heroes to lack a truly great solo feature. But Kiwi director Taika Waititi brings his signature comedic charm to deliver the funniest Marvel movie to date as well as handling some of the most fun action sequences of the year. And Led Zeppellin gets played twice.
#1. Logan
X-Men (2000) was one of the first movies to herald in the current superhero Golden Age and Hugh Jackman's Logan/Wolverine was instrumental in it's success. 17 years and 10 films later, Jackman and nhis character get the send-off they deserve. James Mangold had shown his potential to make a great Wolverine movie but his previous attempt The Wolverin (2013) seemed to be hampered by the studio's mandate of making a PG-13 CGI heavy blockbuster. But after the success of 2016's Deadpool, it was now clear that there was an audience for an R-rated adult superhero movie. Logan was more of a Western than a superhero movie featuring a hero in need of redemption, beautiful cinematography of harsh, desolate wilderness and brutal violence that takes a heavy physical and emotional toll on our protagonists. Patrick Stewart and Jackman both give some of their best performances and each are deserved of Oscar nomination. A fitting end to an iconic and beloved character.
Man I did not like LOGAN... I was like, how many times is he going to flight, flee, fight, flee, fight, flee the guy with the metal hand. Maybe the black and white version they released was better... did you see that?
I see what you mean but as it's a chase movie at least there's an end goal for them while they're escaping each time, rather than just them fighting and fleeing and hiding out somewhere until they get found again. The black and white version is on the Blu-Ray but I haven't watched it yet. I did see the black and white version of Mad Max; Fury Road and I can highly recommend it.
True... I just want to see Wolverine wear the yellow costume though... man!
Yeah so do I. Did you see the alternate ending of The Wolverine where he's given the yellow costume? I also imagine when Marvel reboot the character now that Fox is being bought by Disney, that they'll embrace the comic costume.
Yeah I saw that. They never followed through. I wish they'd embrace the comics so much more.
