Giorgio Taraschi - Hotel WariasteemCreated with Sketch.

Waria is a term coined for transgender people in Indonesia. It combines the local words for woman (wanita) and man (pria).
Warias, traditionally being a target of harassment and intimidation in the world’s most-populous Muslim country, have lately been fighting for better acceptance, thanks to the work of some trail-blazing activists, like "Mami" Joyce, who have themselves endured decades of hardship.
After seeing many colleagues fall victim to AIDS and other fatal diseases, “Mami” now takes care of 20 young transgender sex workers living with her as if in a big family in a dimly lit house-shelter in the middle of Jakarta's business district.
