Economic Recession

FB_IMG_1513976452003.jpgIn candor, it is suffice to say that the country's economy is still rapidly dilapidating. As a result of this execrable and infelicitous development, the prices of commodies in the market keep escalating.
I recall vividly that a fortnight ago, i bought packed sugar for N10. Two days back, i went to a local store to purchase sugar with the presumption that it would be sold at the aforementioned price. The response i got, made me utterly gobsmacked. The seller told me that one packed sugar was N20. Noticing conspicuously the grimace i had on my face, she explained that the price of sugar had recently increased and that compelled her to increase her selling price too, otherwise, she would incur losses. Since i was in dire need of it, i had no other option than to purchase it at that price.
More so, prices of commodities like match box, toothpaste, detergents, body lotions etc., are also rising. Most stunning is that even groundnut and cassava flakes (popularly called "garri" in Nigerian parlance), that the poor could at least boast of affording before, is now costly and it is very disheartening that the situation is bitting harder rather than subsiding.
Recall that in the previous month, Nigeria's Foreign Reserves dropped to $24.74 billion from $26.51 billion. The past governments could have saved enough for the rainny day which obviously, is now. They were rather too busy in their looting and siphoning of public funds which could be attributed to their covetousness and oversight. Notwithstanding, this shouldn't be an excuse for the present government's ineptitude in handling the unpleasant situation since it also has a hand in it.
I assert that the undoing of this administration was hiking the price of gasoline and most especially, devaluing the Naira against the American Dollar without prior consideration on the likely consequences on the economy. Lest i be misconstrued, let me make it clear that i have no intent whatsoever to raise vituperations or animadversions against the incumbent president and his administration.
In furtherance, owing to the dwindling economy, standard of living is higher, yet, there has been no increase in the salaries of labour workers. The poor are becoming poorer and are living in acrimony. Some, despite knowing that starvation could be jeopardizing and detrimental to their health and lives, have resorted to skipping breakfast or lunch and feed less frequently to avoid incurring more debts. This is lugubrious!
In my honest opinion, before death cases from hunger and starvation are heard, government should without further ado, wake from their slumber and take pragmatic steps in ameliorating, revivifying and repositioning Nigeria's economy for better.
