Philippines New President Hunts Drug Lords

-Rodrigo Duterte was sworn in as the Philippines' 16th president
-Duterte is known as a man of the people which showed through on his Presidential inauguration being much less celebrated and more low key
-Nickname: The Punisher
-Served as mayor of Davao City for 22 years
-It is suspected that Duterte has been involved with a motorcycle assassination group called the “Davao death squads” which target drug dealers in Davao.
-Duterte promised a "relentless" and "sustained" fight against corruption, criminality and illegal drugs in his election campaign
-During Duterte’s campaign for President he vowed to clean up the drug dealers in 6 months, which was thought to be impossible by the police.
-240 suspected drug deals have been killed since he was elected President just over a month ago.
-Duterte even said “Shoot him and I’ll give you a medal” in regards to drug dealers.
-Most non political president ever in the Philippines
-Duterte asked 3 police officers to resign in a recent speech. He did not specify the crimes they had committed but threatened to humiliate them if they don’t resign and would order a review of dismissed criminal cases which suggests they have received bribes.
-Also during his speech he also said “If you’re still into drugs, I will kill you. Don’t take this as a joke. I’m not trying to make you laugh, son of a bitch, I will really kill you,”
-Duterte has repeatedly said he’ll offer huge bounties for people who turn in drug dealers, dead or alive
-Duterte says 120,000 drug offenders have voluntarily surrendered to the police force
-As part of rehabilitation the drug offenders must attend Zumba classes which they state will help get the drugs out of their system. Failure to attend can lead to a jail sentence.
