Wecome Steemian friends and friends of the great game of baseball. I enjoy bringing some of Baseball's history to life.

See above the last hoe run ball hit by Ruth. It is in the Hall of fame today.

George Herman "Babe" Ruth Born in 1895 in Baltimore was raised in an orphanage. Or, his parents did not want to handle the "tough" kid.

By 1916 with the Boston red Sox Ruth one of the game's top pitchers. The stats bear out he was on a par with the best in the game. But, he could hit and hit really well! By 1919 he was playing the outfield everyday when not pitching. He led the major leagues with 29 home runs. That was more than some teams hit in those day. Ruth revolutionized the home run.

In 1920 the Yankees bought him from the Red Sox for 80,000 dollars. The Sox owner, Mr. Frazee was desperate for money to finance a Broadway play, No-No-Nanette which did not open until 1925. Frazee was desperate.

Let's move on to 1934. Ruth is now 39 and about finished. He wanted badly to get the word from the Yankees that he would manage the team. Jacob Rupert, Yankee owner did offer Ruth the chance to manage the top farm team in Newark. Ruth balked. He had offers from Detroit and Cincinnati. They felt he fill the ballparks! He balked.

In 1940 the Yankees sold the now 250 lb. Ruth who could no longer play regularly, to the Boston Braves. He had lost his hitting skills as well. Ruth was believed to be very sad and depressed he could not manage the Yankees.

The Babe with a bad Boston Braves team played about thirty games and then decided to retire, batting only .182. But on one glorious day in Forbes field Pittsburgh on a chiily day before about 9500 fans Ruth unloaded a mammoth shot over an 86 foo tall wall and out of Forbes Field entirely. It had never been done previously. Years later the likes of Willie Stargell did it a few times.

He took himself out of the game in the seventh inning, his last at bat, ever.

Great post man - I've always loved the Babe and loved reading about him. I knew this story as well and enjoyed re-visiting it - what an epic way to finish off such an epic career. The Babe was the man and that last at-bat was something else - talk about a way to go out!
