A Modest Proposal to Prevent Missed Calls: Use the Honor System

Dez Bryant's "catch" in the Dallas Cowboys' 2014 NFC playoff game against the Green Bay Packers, the "missed" pass-interference call in the 2019 NFC Finals Game between the Los Angeles Rams, and the New Orleans Saints, as well as an abundance of missed calls (in games both big and small), have left many fans angry with the NFL Officials. However, as the officials are indeed human, the fact that they will miss some calls is undeniable. Simply put, they are often just too far from a play happening too fast. Therefore, there is only one way to prevent these missed plays in NFL games: the honor system.

Now here is why this would work. NFL players are constantly under scrutiny on the national stage. These men are often respectable, and would not like to risk their reputation over a simple missed call. In the case of a close call, referees should simply call the players over, and ask them what happened. Under the scrutiny of national tv, would these players really jeopardize their hard-earned reputation? Of course not! Simply put, by calling over the involved players, the referees would be able to quickly get information regarding the past play, and never miss another call again.

You may be thinking, "There is no way that this would work! Players don't realllyyy care about their reputations." Well, surprisingly, they do. And there is evidence showing so. For example, Rams' corner back Nickell Robey-Coleman, the player who had the questionable hit towards the end of the Rams-Saints game I was talking about earlier, was shown a replay of his hit on Saints' receiver Tommylee Lewis after the game, where when asked, he chuckled and said "Oh hell yea. That was PI (pass interference)."

Other than this, there is nothing that can be done to stop these missed calls. Fans must recognize that the officials are indeed human just like themselves, and therefore must be thankful for their work, as they often get majority of the calls correct. There is no true way to prevent the drama and fury after a missed call from a NFL referee, and therefore, fans must understand that the refs are watching truly a game of inches play out right in front of their faces. Referees are humans, and will screw up. Get over it and just watch the game. It will be better for you, as well as the rest of the world.
