JETHAWANA MONASTERY: The Charming Temple Complex

Hey! What's up, guys? Welcome to my blog, today I'm gonna introduce an ancient architectural, sacred temple complex
which is nestled in Sacred city of Anuradhapura. It is one of the famous and most visited site between both locals and foreigners. The remnants of the ancient Jethawana temple complex lie in the Sacred City of Anuradhapura, spanning over 200 acres.

This complex was built in the park where Arahant Mahinda preached the Dhamma according to the Mahavamsa chronicles. Jethawana Monastery( Jethawanaramaya ) today consists of the ruins of many ancient buildings. Among them, there are several ponds still brimming with water, an ayurvedic hospital, a large preaching center, and even an image house with pillars rising to 27ft. This sacred temple complex is also home to the Jethawanaramaya stupa, initiated by King Mahasen (275-301 AD). Calculated to have been over 400ft tall, it was constructed on solid layers of 93.3 million burnt bricks.

The Museum at Jethawanaramaya today contains many artifacts, including several stone sculptures, balustrade stones, pillars, vessels, and even coins from different countries and accessories made of ivory and precious metals. This complex is one of the tremendous construction of Sri Lankan ancestors. In my opinion, it is one of the must-visit site if you've been to Sri Lanka.
