The big metal fin is a keel I have 2 of them 20180624_141754.jpg as its a bilge keeler type boat its good for coastal cruising as it can safely stand on sand on its own typical ocean cruisers more often have one going deeper for extra stability they are fixed fixtures what turns the boat is the rudder 20180624_141809.jpg part to the left the part to the right is a skeg it adds stability to the rudder as they are connected usually at the bottom(mine has slight damage and isnt currently connected)
A downwind shute is a bit like a parachute that drags you when you are going with the wind directly behind youimages (32).jpeg

Why does a boat need a skeg? Does a keel provide much drag? I think that the keel keeps your boat from fliping over when hit with a cross wind, also the keel helps your boat go in a straight line. Around here a fairly common type of boat is called a 'jon boat' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_boat but since most of them are flat bottomed I hear that it is easy for the boat to travel side ways (like a race car drifting) to prevent the boat from drifting people use v bottomed jon boats Why would a person only want to have 1 keel? In some cases do they have more than two keels, and if so why?

I am glad that you included pictures in your last broadcast...I like being able to see what you are talking about?

I was thinking that perhaps you might go to wordpress.com to recieve a free internet page (maby you will call yourself an international pirate) And you can write about your swashbuckeling adventures, meanwhile while visiting your internet page people could have the option to purchase goods (for example you can go to amazon.com and scrool down to the bottom of the page and click on become an affiliate, and every time someone buys something from your site...then amazon will do all the hard stuff and they will pay you a 'finders fee') On your website you could advertise swords, hooks, peg legs, and eye patches. A person can be an affiliate for all kinds of stores, maby you will get involved in the fishing tackle business?

Jon boat
A jon boat (or johnboat) is a flat-bottomed boat constructed of aluminum, fiberglass, or wood with one, two, or three bench seats. They are suitable for fishing and hunting. The hull of a jon boat is nearly flat, therefore it tends to ride over the waves rather than cut through them as a V-hull might, thus limiting the use of the boat to calmer waters. Jon boats typically have a transom onto which an outboard motor can be mounted.
