Oregon Wildflowers to a Wonderful Dog Rescue

in #story7 years ago

To celebrate our first year together, on June 2nd, my lady and I went on a hike up Tire Mountain trail near Westfir, Oregon. Its a hidden gem of trail along a rocky hillside with immaculate views of snow capped Diamond peak. The immense diversity of native wildflowers are really taking off this time of year. Their are 2 huge meadows that teem with microcosm biological diversity. TireMtn070211175.jpg

After our nice 6 mile hike we drove the 7 miles back down the mountain road. About 5 miles from the tiny residential town of Westfir, OR we spotted what at first looked like wolf wondering on the side of the road. There was a controlled burn going on in the area and this dog was visibly shaken. No cars were around and we were at least 5 miles from Westfir. The dog looked like it was sick but had a collar. We slowly convinced it over to us and tried to check its collar. No name tags or phone numbers were present. Was this dog abandoned? Did it wonder from home for 5 plus miles? We got him into the back of car and noticed feces all over the back of his legs and an aweful smell that had us with the windows down the rest of the way into town. We stopped in Westfir, where people were sitting out on their front porch and asked if they recognized the dog or if there was an animal shelter near by. No such avail, and no such luck with the next bigger town over. So we took him back with us to Eugene, Oregon where we stopped at a 24 hour emergency vet clinic. They gave him a brief look over and check for a RFID chip. nothing. I was not to thrilled about this smelly wondering sick dog in our car, but I know this dog has to be someones and we couldn't of just left him out in the middle of nowhere scavenging. That night we took him home and I made a couple ads on craigslist claiming we had found a lost black and white aussie near Westfir.

Several people have offered to take him but not the owners.
That night luckily he ate some of my home cooking and he didnt get sick in our apartment.
He a very mellow, well mannered dog, he knows a few commands too.
In the morning we decided to take him to the suds em yourself dog wash to get him cleaned up.
The owner was so kind given to situation to let us use the facility for free since we were trying to help him find his home.

After that we took him to the Green hill Humane society to get him checked out. Turns out he has a protonated anus, isnt neutered, has his dewclaws, no rfid chip and who knows what else is wrong with him.

We really hope he is missed and that his owner didn't abandon him on the side of the road. Hes a young, handsome and well mannered dog that i'm sure could find a good home.
Its a really good feeling knowing that we helped this dog out and find its way. I think if the dog goes unclaimed by next week as the finders of this dog we'll have first dibs to adopt him. Since we found him near Westfir, Westy has been a given name so far. This whole experience has made for a unique one year anniversary with my girlfriend.
