5 reasons to throw your bed and sleep on the floor
One month ago, I've moved with my girfriend into a 1 room flat. We work from home on different projects, so we really wanted our room to be perfect. We decided to get rid of the bed we already had before moving.
Now we sleep in sleeping bags on sleeping mattresses. We lay them on the floor before going to sleep and we pack and deposit them in the morning. Here are 5 reasons why I recommend this to anyone.
1. You will be more productive
Our brain understands that the bed is a place for relaxation and for sleep. When we lay on our bed, it automaticaly starts to modify your body and your mood. Your muscles relax, and you get a feeling of comfort and sleepiness. I've encountered that many times when I was just wanting to take a break.
The bed was near, so I usualy laying "a little bit". That moment always got me out of the zone, and out of my productivity flow. Now, please don't confuse this moment with a nap. There is a whole other discussion.
2. You will develop specific triggers & sleep better
Doing your bed every day in the morning is known as a good thing. You start your day with a first task already done. This is the first step to start your day as a do-er, and get productive. By having your new bed on the floor, you will feel an urge to pack it. If you have a traditional bed, you can't remove it from your view. You just make it look nice.
Also, now you will get a night routine that will work as a trigger. Usually, if we use our bed during the day and during awake periods, we'll have problems asleeping. That happens because the brain gets confused and it doesn't link the bed with your sleeping time anymore. Now you won't use the bed during the day. Just unpacking your bed on the floor will trigger your brain and body that it is time to sleep.
3. You can get creative with your room. More space!
When living in a 1 room flat, the bed is very annoying. It takes up a big piece of your space, and influences the room aesthectics. You have to aks yourself what is the main purpose of your room. I use my room as a working space, and a living room. I've allowed myself only one little corner for relaxation.
If you decide to remove the bed from your room, you will have the space that you want. More of it, now you can get really creative. Think about all of the ways that you can use that space. Until now, I've used my room as a space for my trainings and I've also used it as a foto-video studio.
4. Your friends will be amazed and will envy you
Every friend that walks into my house is confused and amazed at the same time. They just don't get it how we can handle this "bed thing". They even check my balcony for any foldable bed that I may be hidding in there.
At the end, every one of them recognises that they would like to have a room like mine. They appreciate the space, the feeling and the simplicity. They would try it, but are afraid about social norms and bad sleeping. This takes me to the next point.
5. You will always be prepared for the worst
Yes. Sleeping on the floor, on the travel mattress, hurts at first. You will feel some discomfort in the first 3-5 days. That happens just because your brain remains alert. It is a survival mechanism and reaction. When our brain feels that it is in a new space, and in new conditions, it stays alert. Just in case a puma or a lyon enters your room.
Sleeping on the flloor may be considered the worst you can get. In life we will always fall at some time. We may loose everything, our car, house and even our bed. On the other side, we may travel the world and be exposed to a lot of odd beds and sleeping conditions. No matter what, you will always be prepared. You won't feel anymore that you're loosing your comfort.
You are awesome!
What do you think about this? Have you tried it? Will you try it?
I couldn't do without our bed, but we have a five bedroom house, so space isn't a concern. However, I like the concept of tiny homes, where every square foot has to be functional. I would love to build a bed that folds into a wall or hides in a cavity in the floor when not needed. I think tiny homes will continue to grow in popularity, and therefore so will creative ways of using small spaces.
I've seen a lot of beds hidden into a cavity or a face wall, but the ideea with the floor is interesting :))
