A Real Fish Story
With us usually living in disparate places on the globe,
it's not often that I get together with both of my brothers at the same time.
So when my younger brother and his son arrived in Canada for a visit from Switzerland, my older brother who at the time lived in Prince Rupert, a port on the Pacific coast of British Columbia, decided to charter an ocean fishing adventure for us all. I live about a hundred miles inland from the ocean, so it was an easy journey for me to meet them there.
(The charter operator stands behind my nephew, his catch, and a father's steadying hand)
The day began very, very early in the morning
as we headed, still only half awake, down to the docks to meet our charter operator/fishing guide and his boat. At first we didn't see him, because charter fishing is a big industry in British Columbia, and there were dozens of craft getting ready to head out on the ocean for an early start to the fishing day.
Which one is our boat?
I don't know - still looking (does anyone recognize The Old Dog?)
With both my brothers trying to spot our boat, I can slip off for a hot coffee :-)
We finally do spot our charter guide and connect with him
and climb aboard when he pulls up to the dock. It is then a freezing, foggy, penetratingly cold and damp couple of hours heading out to places where he thinks the salmon, halibut, and ling cod might be biting.
That's him! That's him! Shout!
The Old Dog grabs the best seat in the house for the trip out
I don't have any pictures of actually catching the fish,
because, with freezing fingers and the chaos of crossing lines as more than one person has a strike - it is hard enough to hold on to your rod and your balance, never mind a camera! But I will show you some of the results of our cold, cold day out on the Pacific:
Halibut, salmon, and ling cod
Three brothers and a nephew
What feasts lay ahead!
Our guide spoiled us rotten, doing all the nasty jobs
Later my nephew got to see many places along the Skeena River
How many Swiss kids get to see places like this?
Although his father did embarass him pretty badly :-)
I even took my nephew for a helicopter ride to get a bird's eye view of the area
So the moral of this fish story is
that even though it's nice to live near family and friends, isn't it a blast when you can travel to faraway places to visit them too!
Nice story! I love fishing.
Gonna make a post about cooking fish now :D
Salmon?
Nope, a carp. Might cook salmon some next time.
Already posted, btw :D
I simply LOVE seeing the results of a real fishing story, especially when it underlines the natural bounty of where I live. For some people fishing is a hobby if not a way to get some thrill or a trophy to pump up some ego, but here, this is the real thing. the best possible food one can eat on the West Coast of the Pacific Northwest and they are also my top three favorite fish as well... (Can you tell I'm positively biased, as I have tried them so many times?) YUMMMMY!!!
Thanks for the post and story, it is good to put faces to names, as always. All for one and one for all!!! Namaste :)
I remember the halibut restaurant on Haida Gwaii!
@onceuponatime so that was @kus-knee?
You're his bro ?
I thought I've seen those totem poles before so I read - haha I'm glad I did
you guys looked like you had great fun!
Who did you think taught him everything he knows? lol
@onceuponatime hahaha okay ~~
You guys are very luck to have the same interest. My sisters don't do crypto and neither Steemit .
Great photos. I love Alaskan Salmon and ever since I visited Anchorage in 2014 I have wanted to go fishing for them in that part of the world. Great to see people doing that. Those fish are worth a lot in western supermarkets and you got them for free (not taking into account boat, bait, and travel costs of course).
Yeah, after the charter costs are figured in, it's not much cheaper than buying the fish in the market. But so much more satisfying!
Thanks for sharing @onceuponatime
That's HUGE fishes there
They get a lot bigger.
You own a helicopter?
Wow, that's cool.
No, I rented it for a ride.
looks like a very successful day fishing and great times with family! love the long -houses too...the art and craft from the coastal tribes are amazing. nice post, thanks!
Yes, there's something very special about West Coast art.
What a treat for you and the family. And nice for all of us that have visited BC before. I used to work aboard a cruise ship yhat docked in Prince Rupert on Thursdays. Id either play a round at the scenic golf course or the casino chief would wrangle up a game of rugby with the local club of Prince Rupert. Congrats on a splendid catch!
I hope that it wasn't raining on the Thursdays that you were in Prince Rupert (although that's highly unlikely, isn't it? lol)
Oh my no. It never rained. i just carried an umbrella for funsies. ;)
awesome story! followed and upped
Thank you! True stories are the best.
We love fishing, and eating them!
Great post, but is that really the Old Dog? We like him!
That's the real Old Dog. I would never, never accept an imposter!
Heartfelt post! And beautiful family moments !
We had a lot of fun, but the visits are always too short.
