Yeah there a lot of folks who say that this is no big deal, yet, just the media silence on the matter lets me know that is probably is a pretty big fucking deal...between this and the massive "spill" (I think definitely on purpose!!) in the Gulf of Mexico we are causing damage that will not easily be undone.
There are many who think it is a massive problem and will continue to be until it is sorted, sadly some are too vociferous in trying to get the message out, people shut down and don't listen.
You're right about other damage being done elsewhere too, I go to the Gulf coast of Florida 2 out of every 3 years and the 'red tides' are getting worse. At first they only affected my father in law but now it bothers all of us who go. That is just one of the environmental problems caused by agents used to clean up the oil spills. I dread to think what else is happening.
