A 2019 American thriller movie in which Henry Brogan (Will Smith) wants to enjoy his retirement, but when he is hunted by his own government, he finds out that a younger version of him (clone) has been produced by the Gemini company.

Gemini Man has been trying to get off the ground for over twenty years. Since 1997, Hollywood has been passing this script from writer to writer, always with another well-known actor in the lead. It took a while, but now director Ang Lee and actor Will Smith bring the film to the silver screen. With mixed results!

Gemini Man combines the latest 3D technologies with a higher frame rate (HFR) to create great image quality. The shots are incredibly sharp, the colors and contrast splash off the screen and during a number of action scenes the higher frame rate in the film works to its advantage. However, your eyes have to get used to this technology. Especially when characters talk, walk, etc. the images sometimes seem very accelerated and / or artificial. Something that ultimately reduces the film experience more than it enriches.

Modern technologies and beautiful images cannot hide how weak this script is. Superficial protagonists, cliché dialogues and a non-innovative concept all contribute to the uninteresting end result. The lack of a connection with the characters also makes the action moments nothing more than 'content-less' stuffing. Twenty years more or less, no amount of time could have saved Gemini Man from this mediocrity.

To conclude..

Gemini Man is a film in which almost all actors perform well in terms of acting. It is of course especially Smith who steals the show, since he has to act in an impressive way towards himself. The way he does this makes the interaction between Henry and his clone Junior really feel. The rejuvenation technology is also very impressive, which means that Will Smith will once again look like his Fresh Prince days. However, the problem is that due to the High Frame Rate it is sometimes visible that the young version of Smith is a digital product. In that respect, Gemini Man is really just a way to show off these two new techniques. Despite the visual spectacle and the good actors, Gemini Man knowsnot to fascinate. It is an entertaining film, but not memorable. The story is chaotic. The construction rattles on all sides. Nowhere does the film really hold its attention and that is a shame because the story really had potential.

Gemini Man is entertaining to have seen once, but it is certainly not a must-see.
