I'm surprised the farmer was okay after running over the box.

The reason he didn’t get any fireball action is because of a piece of equipment called a Recloser we not only use it to protect us when we are going hot work but it also plays a good role in this situation.

It would have been a totally different story if he would have been tall enough to contact the non insulated over head lines!! He would most likely have lived but that tractor would be up in flames!!

Someone once told me, but I kinda forgot...so I am going to ask you. How long are power poles good for, vs how old they actually are?

It all depends on the environment and the treatment. These old poles that they called Black Diamonds were hard as a rock. I climbed one with a date nail in it from 1928. The date nail was put in to signify what year the pole was set. Let me go dig it up and show you hang on....

I climbed that when I was a 2nd step apprentice so that would have been 2006-2007. They can last a Loooooong time. Lol

Are Black Diamonds made out of a pine tree?

I’m not sure what exactly species of pine but yes they are. The treatment they use on them is what makes them so hard and last so long. I imagine it’s some pretty toxic stuff. Lol

I think that I may have seen what you are talking about at a sub-station where there appeared to be some burnt telephone poles. Do you think that it might be some sort of chemical treatment?

Running over that junction box had to mess up his tractor, no.
You see some of these pictures, and you realize the power being carried in those lines, holy s--t.
That bird cover is amazing.
You can tell how much farm land there is in the area from the backround of your pictures.
Cool post @jlsplatts

Nope, he ran over it, backed up and when we arrived he got back to mowing the weeds.

Oh ya!! I’ve seen some pretty amazing stuff when the sh— hits the fan. One day I will share when I had a transformer blow up while I was on the pole. My foreman said all he could see is my pole partner and I’s feet.

Thanks for swinging by @thebigsweed
