Swinging above Amsterdam - Travelling in the Netherlands

in #adventure7 years ago (edited)

Just outside the heart of Amsterdam city centre there are some true pearls to be found. We have recently visit the Amsterdam Look Out which is opened since last year or so. We got to see Amsterdam like we have never seen it before.

The Amsterdam Look Out observatory deck is on top of the Amsterdam Tower in Amsterdam North which is just across Amsterdam Central Station. You can easily get there by the free ferry which goes multiple times every hour. From there on it is a short walk along docks of the IJ.

Suzanne and me are both born in Amsterdam and wandered through Central Station more times than we are able to count, but we never really noticed the Amsterdam letters on top of the station. Seeing Amsterdam from above gave us a whole new view of the city and made us appreciate the beauty of this city again. Sometimes we take the things closest to us for granted…

We had a beautiful day so we could see pretty far and we were able to take some great pictures. There are several binoculars on the deck and they are free. You can see as far as Almere or Naarden for example or just stay close and zoom in on the Westertoren.

For the real dare devils they installed a two-seater swing which let you swing over the edge. Take note; you are 100meters above the ground!! Pretty scary!

There is also a panorama skybar and restaurant where you can enjoy the beautiful view and enjoy some drinks and pretty good food. Small tip; do not eat before trying out the swing.

Tips to visit near the Amsterdam Tower

Fleamarket IJhallen
When you visit the Amsterdam tower in the weekend you should check out if the flewmarket is there that weekend. It is called IJhallen en has over 750 vendors selling their private belongings like books, paintings, clothes, furniture and much much more. The IJhallen is organized once a month so make sure to check out their calender.

De Tolhuistuin
This is lovely area with a beautiful garden, restaurant, exhibitions. There are also many free parties and exhibitions in the garden where you can easily spent a couple of hours.

Eye Film Museum
A cinema and exhibitionroom inside a futuristic building along the docks of the IJ. They also have a nice terrace where you can enjoy all the boats passing by while sipping on a cocktail.

Pllek
This place has its own beach along the docks where you can enjoy a nice meal and absorb some vitamin D while enjoying the industrial surroundings.

When you are visiting Amsterdam try to look a bit further then only the city centre and the standard tourist traps. This will give you great pleasure and there is so much more to be discovered.

Jep, the old Shell building closed, as well as the other industries there and they are making it a leisure area now. It is becoming a nice place for locals as well as tourists. Maybe a reason for you to come back and see? ;) Thanks for your contribution.
