Where I'm living on Marion Island - not quite the Antarctic, but definitely on the way!
Hi all, I want to show you where the research team lives before I show you more penguins and seals. It's been a while since my last post since we've been out doing research and our internet connection hasn't been great.
The Marion Research Base consists of three wings. Two of those are accommodation areas and one is a science block, where on the ground floor you find scientific labs and top floor has the offices for all different research carried out in the island.
The base also consists of the dining hall, kitchen, bar and braai (barbecue for people not from South Africa) area, mechanical area for the mechanic, central hub, radio control room, movie rooms, gym, sauna and jacuzzi.
It's a state of the art base.
man will give you a follow , looks very interesting your stories in this far away place, at least for me : cheers !
Thanks for your kind words of support, @ericoliveira! Sorry it took me so long to reply. With our internet connection here it's hard to do things often on Steemit. Wishing you well on the platform!
Wow - not what I would have expected. Very impressive
Thank you so much for support, @tim-beck! I really appreciate it.
What are you guys researching?
Hi, @jerry12, I'm not sure if Thando can load his account yet so I'll answer quickly for him - check out his first post (this is his second) where he explained what the research programme is all about. It includes seabirds and seals, but rather let him tell you himself :-)
Hi there @kiligirl, thank you for explaining, sounds interesting. I'll have to check it out :)
I will follow you, sounds interesting :)
Thank you, @teks. I'm a bit slow in picking up messages sometimes because of the internet connection, but I do see them eventually. Thank you for your support!
Do not worry, I understand the situation. It has to be very difficult.
Thanks for understanding, @teks. The connection is so limited that I get the best bandwidth through FB Messenger (I don't really understand why), so I send my posts to @kiligirl in a series of messages and she posts them on my behalf, then she sends me screenshots of the final post and the comments. It takes ages to download those and sometimes the connection drops before I have a chance to get back to her with my replies.
The things we take for granted - a good internet connection and variety in food are pretty high on my list at the moment!
Do not worry. I cleaned my followers when I was a month old because I realized that some were inactive. Now that I know your situation, I have added you again. So despite the difficulties you have to upload your work I will continue reading you. I hope you are very lucky and get as soon as possible what in other regions of the planet we take for granted.
Thank you so much, @teks, I really appreciate your understanding and adding me back. I'm looking forward to being much more active on Steemit once I get back to South Africa next year, but in the meantime it's luck of the draw on internet connection and my land-based connection being able to post for me.
That looks really modern, @scienceguy! It sounds like you have a lot of conveniences to make life more pleasant there.
What are those mountains in the distance across the bay? Does the team ever go there?
That is Prince Edward Island also a protected area no permanent structures on the island only a group of 10 well motivated scientists go there after every 4 years for 10 days it's extremely protected.
