Sub  Saharan Africa has seen growing numbers of chess players within it ranks and it's no surprise that the game that is so loved around the world is been played here among black Africans.

Chess originated from India, that been debated is not our major concern and the board game with an estimated players of around 605 millions around the globe and Africa (sub Saharan) is home to thousands of players if not millions.

This days, elementary schools have also introduce the sport in their curriculum and you won't be surprised how young African children will play the game with enthusiasm. But the big question is can the sub Saharan Africa produce a world champion? Or is it just a game to show superiority in status?

Let me answer that question.Statistics does not favour the sub Saharan Africans who may want to be a chess champion.Record shows that they are just four black grand masters (GM)  in the world. Kenny Solomon of South Africa, Amon simutowe of Zambia ,Maurice Ashley of the United States and Pontus Carlson of Sweden. So should Africa  stop playing chess because of it lack of GM the answer is a big no.

The odd  is against sub Saharan Africans when it comes to world chess champions but the future of chess is in its motherland.
