President Trump has conceded mercy to 63-year-old great grandma Alice Johnson, who has been serving life in jail for a non-violent drug offense.

The case was featured a week ago when Kim Kardashian West met Mr Trump to campaign for her discharge.

The White House said she had been a model detainee and endeavored to restore herself.

Johnson was imprisoned in 1996, with 15 others, for participating in a cocaine conveyance ring.

She was indicted on ownership and illegal tax avoidance charges in Tennessee.

Johnson met the criteria for previous President Barack Obama's Clemency Project 2014 yet was turned down for discharge days before the finish of his term.

"Ms Johnson has acknowledged obligation regarding her past conduct and has been a model detainee in the course of recent decades," the White House said in an announcement.

"Regardless of accepting a lifelong incarceration, Alice strived to restore herself in jail, and go about as a guide to her kindred detainees."

The announcement included that the organization put stock in pummeling wrongdoing yet had confidence in giving another opportunity to the individuals who attempted to better themselves in jail.

Kardashian West joined what has been a long-running effort for Johnson's flexibility, led by the Can-Do establishment, loved ones.

She was first alarmed to the issue in the wake of detecting a video about the case via web-based networking media.

Kardashian West went to the White House with her attorney, Shawn Holley, and had likewise connected up with Mr Trump's child in-law and presidential guide, Jared Kushner, who has been campaigning for jail change.
