Eyes are one of the most important organs of the body and the most sensitive too. Therefore, it requires a very caring approach as well. Your eyes need your added attention, especially during the summertime. Being a little careless can irritate your eyes with dry itches, conjunctivitis, itching, a burning feeling, or even dark circles.

Moreover, you can even strain your eyes and cause fatigue by staring at the smartphone or computer screen for a prolonged time. Besides, you must keep your eyes protected from allergies as well.

However, just chewing on some carrots or washing your eyes will not complete your eye care regime. Adding a few superfoods in your daily diet will protect yourself from several eye diseases. While you must ensure that you have a healthy diet, you must also get your eyes checked up every year. The regular checkup is all the more important if you are diabetic and have any conditions already.

Getting your eyes checked up at regular intervals will help you keep a tab of any problems on time such as conditions like glaucoma or macular degeneration. You can then seek remedies accordingly. According to experts, there are specific food items that one must include in their daily diet for healthy eyes:

Green leafy vegetables

Green vegetables are the best source of antioxidants like beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, and Vitamin A and C which are the natural sunscreen for eyes. These are essential for your eyes as they remain protected from the harmful effect of UV rays and related diseases like macular degeneration.

Oily fish

Oily fishes are known for their high omega 3 fatty acids content like docosahexaenoic acid. Fishes like tuna, mackerel and salmon are among such oily fishes. These fishes contain lower levels of docosahexaenoic acid that protect us from any disease like dry eye syndrome or macular degeneration at a later age.

Citrus fruits

Oranges are among the best citrus fruits that contain high amounts of bioflavonoid s and Vitamin C. The fluid and the connective tissues in the eyes are made of these essential components and majorly work towards improving the health of the blood vessels. Your eye lens is protected from oxidising and getting hazy. You can also reduce the chances of cataract with increased intake of Vitamin C and heal any infections in the cornea.

Eggs

These are one of the best foods for eyes as the yolk contains Vitamin A, lutein, zinc and zeaxanthin. While Vitamin A protects the cornea, the chances of macular degeneration and cataracts reduce considerably with the lutein and zeaxanthin. Zinc, on the other hand, is beneficial for your retina and night vision.

Dairy products

Vitamin A is the main constituent of the dairy products that help keep your cornea safe. Zinc is another important component present in the dairy products that help deliver Vitamin A to the eyes of the liver.

Apart from keeping your eyes clean and safe from the computer glare, you must also ensure that you consume a healthy diet including the above five essential food items. These foods will not just help protect your eyes from any diseases, but also keep you in a good health overall.
