When you find yourself in Portland and are looking for a good theater, take a look in a historic building known as The Armory. It used to be a home for Oregon National Guard, but from 2006 it is home to Portland Center Stage, a theater company being one of the top 20 in the country. There are two theaters inside where you can enjoy great shows. The main stage has 590 seats, and the smaller one has 190 seats. There is no bad seat inside them, and smaller theatre is set in an intimate configuration where you can catch every blink of the actor's eye and facial expression. You can attend a variety of classical and world premiere productions. Also, a lot of high-quality education programs take place here. Over 150,000 people visit this place every year. The building received a Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification with a lot of sustainable design following it. Some of them are displacement ventilation systems, skylights for additional natural lighting and also a catch system for rain.
Every first and third Saturday you can take free public tours from noon to 1 p.m. where you can learn about the history of the building and how it was transformed from a military site to public cultural spot with some of the most sustainable systems. Inside the place, you can have a drink in a bar, or a snack while waiting for the concert to begin. There is a café where you can meet other people and socialize before the show. After performances, you can enjoy a meal in some of the restaurants within walking distance of The Armory. This place is an excellent venue for hosting excellent company events, as well. You can often attend a variety of activities from conferences to wine tasting. Each summer a Playwright Festival is going on, where scripts from artists all around the world are chosen and read with thousands of audience members.
If you are looking for great live performances and other events in an intimate, impressive setting, this is just a place for you.
