Why do Americans say their country is the greatest, its obnoxious

in #america8 years ago

I just find it very obnoxious when i hear American, especially celebrities, especially politicians, say that the US is the greatest country in the world and whip up a frenzy.

To those of you that believe it is, i ask you, how do you know that it is?
Have you actually traveled to, and lived on every single country in the world?
If the answer is no, how can you possible say it's the greatest country.

Paraphrasing one of my favorite stand up comedians Lewis Black, saying that, is like the work colleague constantly saying they are the greatest employee and constantly telling you they are. At some point you'd want to slap that person silly.
You Americans saying that, are just like that work colleague, it is very annoying and obnoxious.

Maybe, just maybe other countries have things and do things that you as a country may want to take on board, such as free healthcare, 4 day work weeks, not spending billions on military.

Just a bit of food for thought.

I'm from the U.S. and I can attest to this as well. I find it annoying too, nationalism is being proud of the place where you were born (something which you have no control over) and is stupid and pointless. However, Americans certainly aren't the only ones guilty of it, and pointing out the flaws in one country and attributing them to everyone living there is just as ignorant. No where is perfect, and even the entire concept of 'countries' is pretty dumb if you ask me.

I agree, I know a lot of Americans and they are are just people, all different. I think there is a cultural trait in the US to say how fantastic, super, faboulous, amazing and awesome things are, even if they are fairly mundane. The superlatives can be quite confusing at first, until you decode what people really like, versus what they are just being polite about.
Im English and we can tend to be sardonic, positivity from us sounds like 'Whats the worst that can happen?', its not a better approach than in the US, its just cultural.

Hi! This post has a Flesch-Kincaid grade level of 7.9 and reading ease of 75%. This puts the writing level on par with Tom Clancy and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

It is mob mentality

Meanwhile people in other countries make fun of america and think it's a very bad country
