My 5 favorite platforms to connect with other Anarchists and Libertarians — What are yours?

in #anarchy7 years ago (edited)

Hi friends,

Today I would like to share some ways to connect with others within the Freedom Movement. Often we find it hard to get in touch with other like-minded people and many times you'll hear that some people only know other anarchists or libertarians from the Internet. From my own experience I can tell you that here in the Netherlands it is very hard to find our kind. There are some libertarians around, but you won't see many all out ancaps.

Therefore, I would like to share my favorite online places where it's fairly easy to meet other anarchists and libertarians.

1. Facebook groups

Although I realize mainstream social media are dying, my favorite place to talk to other like-minded people is in special Facebook groups. Why? Simple. Most people are still active on Facebook, including anarchists and libertarians. The largest group I'm currently in has over 17,000 people in it!

Here are my favorite Facebook groups to be active in:

  • Anarcho Capitalist Community (Link)
As far as I know, this is the largest gathering of Anarchists and libertarians on social media: 17,229 members at the time I am writing this post.

  • Voluntaryism (Link)

  • Crypto-Anarchists (Link)
This group has recently been created by @ancapsteve to talk about crypto! My experience is that it's a very friendly group and people are happy to give you advice. If you don't like Facebook, there are talks to move to another platform such as Discord or Minds.com, so keep an eye on this group.

2. Steemit.chat

In case you haven't seen it yet, there are some interesting channels on Steemit.chat. Of course, the #Anarchy and #Anarchism-trail channels are good for finding out about like-minded bloggers (like me!), but I'm actually more referring to the channels moderated by @the-ego-is-you. The most interesting channel is called #Cooperative_Agorism. It's not a post-n-run channel and the chat is very serious and civilized.

3. Freedom Cells (freedomcells.coeo.cc)

Freedom Cells are an initiative to get in touch with real life people and organize. It's mostly based on agorist principles, but basically anyone can join and connect with like-minded people. This platform is especially popular in the United States. If you're interested in this initiative, check out Derrick Broze's work on his profile @dbroze.

4. Steemit

Of course I couldn't leave out Steemit.com. I've met a lot of new people on this platform who are very friendly and also create great content. If you're new around here, check out the #anarchy and #freedom tags and take a look if you can meet some new people.

Here are some interesting people to follow: (sorry if I left somebody out!)
@adamkokesh@ancapsteve@corbettreport@danilo-cuellar@dbroze@doitvoluntary@dollarvigilante@dwinblood@jeffberwick@kafkanarchy84@larkenrose@kencode@lukewearechange@politics-trail@pressfortruth@sondreb@sterlinluxan@tftproject@thatgermandude@the-ego-is-you@tyrannyunmasked@voluntary@wearechange

Let me know if I'm missing somebody that creates good anarchy-themed content!

5. Discord

Yesterday I joined an Anarchist group on Discord, but I'm not sure I'm content with it. It seems like another ancap-ancom debate/meme war group. However, the potential I see to use Discord for connecting with other people is big, given its many features: different channels, text and voice chat, etc.

I hope the Facebook group Crypto-Anarchists will move to Discord.

What are your favorite groups? Let me know! I'd love to meet more like-minded people.

Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed this post, don't forget to upvote, resteem and follow me @rvanstel. Have a nice day!

Nice post! I never met any follow minded libertarian before I joined Steemit. So great, let us Steem on!They do not seem to exist in Norwegian academia and health care. Very strange indeed. Followed btw:)

Wow, quite a bit of Norwegian (and Swedish) libertarians that have reacted to this post. That's great! Nice to meet you! And thanks for the resteem, I really appreciate it!

Thx for the facebook groups, will check them out.

I love discord because I used to use Teamspeak for years so it's a huge improvement - only video chat is missing.

I game a lot so sometimes I use twitch and found new gaming buddies that way

Have a cool staturday

Yeah, another feature of Discord is that you can connect it to your Twitch account (and also Steam account I believe).

Thanks for reading!

yea, really enjoying discord

Followed. Libertarian from Norway here :)

Nice to meet you brother! Greetings from the Netherlands.

Thanks for sharing these platforms with us !! Interesting as always !

Thanks a lot friend!

Thanks for all of that info @rvanstel. I'll be resteeming this (mostly so I can find it easily when I have some more time dive into it) and giving you a follow. I have been staying away from the chat and discord stuff so far (just not my scene), but it looks like I may want to give it a shot. Thx.

Thank you very much! I'm glad this post is useful to you.

Btw, we're in the election in Norway this autum. Liberalistene. It's historical. The first time a libertarian party will have that many votes in Norway. Previous partys have reached like 500 votes. We are expecting around 10k votes. Could go to 30k as well. Giving the party around 10$ each year in goverment substitutes the next 4 years. (Getting back some of our tax money.)

It's good to hear you are allowed to call your party "Liberals". Here in Sweden the old social liberal party Folkpartiet changed it's name simply to "Liberals" in order to prevent the new classical liberal party Klassiskt Liberala Partiet from having it, after they had already complained to authorities about the names being too similar! Quite the heist - and they're closer to the Social Democrats than ever.

I hope you do well in the election!

Wow that sucks man. Is Sweden doomed?

I hope not. Some things speak for it.

Sweden is after all not exactly as socialist as most people think or at least in the same way that they usually imagine it; We still have 'many' semiprivate options (in schools, hospitals, roads, state run post offices were replaced by local shops, now farmacies are semi-private as well etc) and the regulation and corruption in general is of course really bad in other countries as well, for example the U.S. In many cases, Sweden isn't the worst. At least we still get something for our taxes.

On the other hand there are many dark clouds. Healthcare is rapidly deteriorating again, the draft is probably making a return, unprincipled populism is growing. We've got a large portion of islamist radicals above all else, but also growing violent (traditional) anarchist and fascist clash. Oh and the money that was supposed to be for researching and preventing radical Islam.... the feminists took that and used it for gender 'science' instead.

The immigration and EU sceptical party is now expected to be the second largest party. The leaders of said party joined it when many members were still wearing nazi uniforms at their meetings.... They're very reformed now, but let's just say that their scepticism isn't against state power.

Right now it looks to me like we could stay the course with Trump like populism only for so long before a more ideological movement starts to take over. Hopefully it will be an alliance of established social "Liberals", rather than the Leftwing party... or even worse, the fascists that see themselves as the "antidote" to communism.

Question is, what happens if we remove the incentive for islamists to move here... but which also tend to work as a bribe for them not to attack us from within?

I try to cheer up though and work on solutions, rather than lock myself into the ever popular cage of cynicism and pessimism =)

Very cool! Good luck in the elections. We had our elections in March but the Libertarian Party didn't get any seats in parliament... Such a shame.

Is it true that you have like 3 or 4 different capitalist parties in Holland?

Not that I know of. The biggest party is the 'liberal' party, who portray themselves as classical liberals, but are actually in favor of bigger government (in the form of the EU) and for maintaining the welfare state.

The Libertarian Party is obviously capitalist, but they didn't get any seats in parliament.
There is also a newer party, Forum voor Democratie (Forum for Democracy), who are in a sense more market oriented than most parties in the Netherlands. But they also stand for protectionism.

So the question is what you define as capitalist. More government means less capitalism ;-)

Absolutely. More precicely I was thinking of
libertarian parties. Looks like theres only 1 then.

Yep, although Forum voor Democratie is also somewhat classical liberal in some ways. But also a bit protectionist.

Upvoted. Good stuff, hope to see you more often here..
following you

Thank you for the post. These are great apps for people to check out. I also use Steemit, Cell411 and FBI-Book to connect with people and other anarchists.

In addition to what you mentioned I would like to suggest Cell411 and Nextdoor.com.

Cell411 being decentralized emergency response management among other things like ride sharing and messaging apps. You can create "cells" with close friends or family. I use it to keep my local activist group connected and we can help each other out if necessary.

NextDoor.com is awesome for staying connected with people right in your neighborhood. I see people on there all the time in my local area warning each other about potential threats, offering skills, asking to hire people for work, and all sorts of things that make my neighborhood stronger.

Are you familiar with either of these apps?

Thanks,
Tyler

Hey Tyler,

Yes I am familiar with those two apps. They look great, but the thing for me is that they are unknown to must people here in the Netherlands. But thanks for suggesting them! Maybe somebody else will start using them.
