Dear Mexican Immigrants – Why DID you flee Mexico?

Estimados inmigrantes mexicanos, ¿Por qué huyeron de México?

I ask this because I also had to ask this question about my own family’s flight from Vietnam.

My family was escaping violent political conflict due to the Viet Cong and U.S. military during the Vietnam war.

Armed soldiers were going door to door, kidnapping young boys, and forcing them to join the fight. Bombs were constantly being dropped overhead, and my family had to often duck for cover in underground bunkers every time they heard a plane above.

My family wanted to live in peace, making and selling Pho noodles as they once did.

They no longer could due to the chaos, and so fled to America because they thought the opportunities would be better.
It wasn’t until I was an adult that I began to think critically about how this violence started and what could be done to stop it.

If you are watching this and you or your parents or grandparents fled Mexico due to the political violence and poverty, I want to take a moment to empathize with you and let you know that it’s completely understandable.

You did not cause the drug war. You did not cause the cartel violence. You did not cause the state system of oppression. You did not confiscate firearms and make it legally difficult for people to defend themselves.

However, what you do with your time, energy, and freedom today CAN make a difference for all people as to whether they continue to be stolen from, murdered, and enslaved, or whether they can move toward peace and prosperity through mutual respect.

Which is why I want to share with you the key facts I learned about the conflict in Mexico to help you understand what needs to change.

First and foremost, the U.S. government has been a driving force behind the instability and violence.

The War on Drugs, coupled with countless offensive policies of subversion, from embargoes to coups to CIA drug running, has lead to regional instability.

The War on Drugs is what has allowed the cartels to build a violent operation as they can make all kinds of money in black-market deals with little recourse because their operations are underground.

The state-created limitation on competition with high financial reward has driven many cartel heads to seek profit through violence in the underground drug business.

If you want to help end the violence of the cartels, the first step is to get on board with ending the war on drugs both in the U.S. and abroad. This way, legitimate market services can arise and protection of consumers and businesses can flourish at the open market level.

Second, the lack of respect of property rights has lead to people being victimized in the U.S. and in Mexico.
When people are not free to defend themselves against aggressors, only the most vile, violent people will flourish because they are willing to do whatever it takes to gain power.

Good people, honest people, like many people watching this video, if kept from being able to defend themselves, will perish if their rights are not respected, whether it’s from being victimized by cartels or being victimized by the state.

The Mexican government has virtually banned gun ownership at large in Mexico by forcing all gun sales to come from one store in Mexico City, limiting gun type purchases, and strapping a large amount of red tape around the application process.

This has lead to disaster for Mexican people at large as they are kept from being able to defend themselves against the cartels and against unscrupulous government officials.

And yes, it is well known how bad the corruption has gotten in Mexico with bribe accusations leading all the way up to the President in the millions of dollars.

This is why you cannot rely on the state for salvation.

When there is a psychology of power that is given immunity from market forces, that power can be co-opted by anyone evil enough to do whatever it takes to control it.

This is precisely what has happened in Mexico and in virtually all governments around the world.

Decentralizing power, respecting the property rights of individuals, and freeing the market, are the essential keys to bringing stability for not only Mexico, but to the U.S. and all other countries as well.

So please, take the time to think about your own story.

What painful situations did your mother, father, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins experience that lead them to seek refuge in America in the first place?

If you do not take the time to ground yourself in philosophical ethics based on the respect of individual rights, you’ll soon repeat the same destructive policies that lead to the widespread instability, poverty, and suffering that came to Mexico in the first place.
