Exclusive: This could be General Mobile’s first Android Go phone, the GM 8 Go
As Google teases Android Go phones for MWC 2018, we’re able to provide a first look at General Mobile’s first Android Go phone.
General Mobile’s GM 8 Go will sport an 18:9 5.03-inch display, a MediaTek 6739 SoC, and a 3,500 mAh battery.
General Mobile will likely unveil the smartphone at MWC 2018.
Google’s new slimmed-down operating system, Android Go, still has yet to arrive on any hardware despite its unveiling last December. That will likely change at MWC 2018, according to a recent blog post by Google’s Hiroshi Lockheimer. The blog post didn’t specify which OEMs will be releasing phones at the trade show, but thanks to a recent tip given to Android Authority, we’re getting our first look at what could be the first Android Go phone from General Mobile.
The General Mobile GM 8 Go, as you can see in the photos, will be a rather unassuming device made primarily of plastic. According to our source, it will feature a 5.03-inch 18:9 LCD display with a 1,440 x 720 resolution and a pixel density of 320 ppi. Powering the device will be the MediaTek 6739 processor backed by 1 GB of RAM. It’ll also have 16 GB of storage, a 3,500 mAh battery, a single 13 MP rear-facing camera, and a 5 MP front camera.
The GM 8 Go will also come with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a bottom-firing speaker, and will run Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition).
Android Authority could not confirm these specs or images with any other sources.
If the name “GM 8 Go” sounds familiar, that’s because this Go device is based on General Mobile’s other GM 8 smartphone that runs Android One.
The GM 8 Go isn’t the first Android Go phone to be announced. Micromax revealed its first Android Go phone, the Bharat Go, in January, though the company didn’t provide specifications or images of the device. In fact, the smartphone was supposed to launch in India by the end of January 2018, though it looks like that hasn’t happened yet.
Nokia has also been heavily rumored to show off an Android Go phone of its own at MWC this year. This device, likely the Nokia 1, is said to come with an HD 16:9 display, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of internal storage.
We’ll update this story as we learn more about all the Android Go devices launching at MWC.
