As long as they are still young, meerkats are friendly creatures but once they reach about 6 months of age, they can change completely into the 'pit-bulls' of the mongoose world. The 'pet' meerkat, now of an age to defend its group and being human imprinted, perceives visitors as intruders.
Meerkats are much smarter than they look. A recent study at St Andrews University – Scotland – found meerkats use complex coordinated behavior's, which rivals that of chimps, baboons, dolphins and even humans. They solve tasks with help from their mob but also a bit of independent thought.
Meerkats only go outside during the daytime. Each morning, as the sun comes up, the mob emerges and begins looking for food. They use their keen sense of smell to locate their favorites' foods, which include beetles, caterpillars, spiders and scorpions. They”ll also eat small reptiles, birds, eggs, fruit and plants.

Meerkats primarily eat insects, such as grubs and termites, but will also eat small vertebrates, eggs and some plant matter. They may chew on Tasma melons and dig up roots for water. They are very possessive of their food and defend their prey from other members of their pack.

Meerkat (Suricata suricatta): a small mongoose found in southern Africa. Despite what its name may suggest, a meerkat is not a member of the cat family. Meerkats are weasel-like animals that are members of the mongoose family. The mongoose family Herpestidae includes small terrestrial carnivorous mammals.
