Village chicken is a term in Indonesia for domestic chickens that are not handled by commercial mass cultivation and do not originate from strains or races generated for such commercial purposes.

Village chickens is one type of free-range chicken (not a race) that has been bred since time immemorial. Scientific name for chicken is Gallus domesticus, this type of chicken is the most widely kept poultry to be used for meat and eggs for consumption. Country chicken in Indonesia is generally farmed only as a sideline only. Chicken kampung maintained almost every house, as a side business of the maintenance of chicken is not done intensively. In general, the community breeding chickens in the umbaran, the pet chickens left off to find their own food in the wild, and inserted the cage at night only. Feeding was not done routinely, feed is only given if there are remnants of rice or other food scraps.

To distinguish it is now known as chicken poultry (short for "chicken not race") for the chicken that has been selected and maintained with improved cultivation techniques (not just diumbar and left to find their own food) Chicken farms have a big enough role in supporting the community economy rural because it has a high adaptability to the environment and maintenance is relatively easier.
