It's nature red in tooth and claw. It couldn't work any other way. Survival of the fittest. Natural Selection. EVERY living thing has to die some time; if nutrients were locked away in immortal bodies, they'd never get recycled so we'd have to stop reproducing / eating.
The planet only has a finite amount of resources. "Shit happens" because we eat things.
