Know Your Animals #3 - HORSES
Welcome to Animal Central
Hello Animal Lovers!
Here's today’s dose of the cute and the cuddlies.
Equus ferus caballus, better known to you and me as HORSES are one of the cutest and friendliest animals we've encountered.
They are found all around us - from serving in the police department, to doing outstanding work in the entertainment industry, horses definitely make their presence known. Be it agriculture, therapy, recreational and sporting activities, horses have become a very important part of human life.
Here are 10 interesting facts that you may or may not know about HORSES:
1.
Just within a few hours of being born, Baby Horses can start walking and running around...
2.
A horse's teeth occupy greater area in their head than their brain... AND an adult horse brain weighs approximately 22 ounces, which is almost half the weight of a human brain.
3.
Horses are very capable of sleeping both LYING DOWN as well as STANDING UP.
4.
Horses are able to see almost 360 degrees at one time. This is due to the fact that the eyes are on the side of their head. And most often, horses are looking in the same direction where their ear is pointing.
5.
Horses like to eat sweet things, and will most likely reject anything that tastes bitter or sour.
6.
Horses have a very interesting feature where they use their facial expressions to communicate their feelings. In fact, they tend to use their eyes, ears and nostrils to show their different moods.
BE CAREFUL when you see a horse with its ears backwards and the nostrils flared - it may be ready to attack.
7.
Horses love drinking water, and can gulp down about 25 gallons a day. So it's no surprise that water accounts for 50% of their body weight.
8.
There are almost 300 different breeds of horses across the world. And almost 60 million horses exist in total...
9.
The first horse was cloned in 2003, and was named Prometea. The birth took place in Italy.
10.
From as long back as the 17th century, horses have been assisting humans with their services in the police force. And although their usage became less popular with the invention of the automobile in the 20th century, even today several horses are still being used by police forces in many countries.
