Silent Victims Of The Venezuela's Crisis

Pets are one of the silent victims of the crisis in Venezuela. It is really sad to see how it has become common to find pets, mostly dogs, fearful across the streets or trying to get some food from the garbage, some still with their collar as a sign that they belonged to a family.

This phenomenon, in part, may be due to two situations: The first may be due to the country's economy. Making the monetary conversion, the basic salary is approximately $ 6.5 per month, complicating the acquisition of essential products for day to day. An economic bag of 2Kgs of dog food is at approximately $ 4, giving this as a result that covering the expenses, only food, of a pet in Venezuela becomes an almost impossible task. What has led many owners to leave these animals on the street to the good of God.

Another possible reason is emigration. The large number of Venezuelans emigrating to multiple countries in search of a better opportunity is not a secret. This action implies leaving behind the culture, customs, home and sometimes to that small member of the family who does not understand why he has been abandoned, the pet. In a country where people flee the high level of inflation, saving to buy the tickets is very difficult, so to include the ticket of the pet is unfortunately not an option for many.

At this point, I would like to give the example of a 4-year-old Schnauzer named Cotufa:

Years ago a family from Caracas decided to adopt her at 4 months of age, to give her the love and shelter that an animal needs.

At the beginning everything was happiness and harmony but over the years and with the problems of the country this family began to plan to leave Venezuela, which involved increasing working hours to get the money that would allow them to travel. This search for income made little by little the care of the dog was neglected, going from forgetting caresses, neglecting the change of newspaper so that she could do her needs, to the level of leaving her alone for many days at home without anyone in charge of giving her food or water. For work issues I was given the opportunity to meet Cotufa with his family and it was easy to recognize the level of abandonment that the pet had and in turn,

in the eyes, you could see the nobility and loyalty that that animal provides.

When the owners packed their bags to go to the airport, they told me that they had no established plan for the pet, that is, after being a member of that family, Cotufa was going to have an uncertain future. In the same week that they left the country, it was that I really understood that the puppy was abandoned as another object in the house.

Without waiting for the opinion of my family, I looked for a taxi, picked up their few belongings and went to where today is its new home. Thanks God she can have a happy story in a house full of love and where we hope it will continue, but sadly it is not the outcome of most of the abandoned pets.




To conclude, it seems convenient to congratulate the people who struggle to have these "Angels with Tail" in the best possible conditions. Also, I want to emphasize that nothing justifies leaving our pets abandoned. There is always a better option for those who I consider are the furry members of the family, because as I explained before, they do not understand the situation of the country, they just feel sad and abandoned by the people they love the most. Pets also get depressed and suffer stress. I expose the case of these innocent creatures to try to raise awareness about this issue.
