Who know why they do it. Irritated at the noise pollution? Confounded by the changes in the ecosystem? Just plain dumb? Who knows..
400+ Pilot Whales beached themselves last moth in New Zealand. The Final resting spot, Farewell Split, has been well known for such strandings, but not in this magnitude. 100 of the whales were 're-floated/rescued'. Scientist hypothesis that the geographical configuration played a large part in the incident. The low tide of 3 to 5 meters deep is a trap for any behemoth, regardless of intelligence.
